While it as not a resounding endorsement for brexit (the two brexit parties only getting a little over 45% of the vote) - our voting system means that they have a majority of the seats and can easily pass whatever they want. So it looks like that chapter is now well and truly over. On the plus side given the choice between no deal (offered by the brexit party) and the May/Boris deal an emphatic 95% of brexiteers voted for the May/Boris deal - so that also resolves the ;no deal' debate and takes it off the table.

It will be interesting to see what is delivered when brexit truly starts in January (after the last 3 years of deciding what brexit meant).

Getting trade deals with the EU will be a piece of cake compared with getting other deals outside of the EU. The EU economy is failing with no sign of any recovery.....good news for the UK as our negotiating position is strengthened by the fact that they won't be in a position to play hardball.

The beating heart of mother Europe revolves around Germany and France having stable economies and with no sign of any economic recovery the burden of European stability rests solely on their shoulders.....good luck with that then, especially when they have to look after all their dependent relatives.

We will get our trade deals with the EU....on time, we'll baked and to our taste

Johnson made a big deal about his oven ready deal during the election campaign. Now it looks as if it’s not quite oven ready - he wants to amend it so that the extension period can’t be extended beyond 31st Dec 2020.

He had a mandate based on the deal. Now he already wants to change it.

Good move l would say Gill.....We are moving into the second stage of negotiations so it is important that our EU friends know that time is of the essence in getting amicable trading deals/details done. As l said in a previous post the EU economy is a bit wobbly at the moment so it is in our interest as to get the oven stoked up a bit....We wouldn't want them dragging their feet in order to exhort a few more billion out of our pockets now would we?

These arbitrary cut off dates and cliff edges haven’t worked well in the past three years.

I had hoped that there was to be an outbreak of sense and the negotiations weren’t going to be conducted with the added jeopardy of no deal being used as a threat again.

Johnson repeatedly called the EU ‘our friends and partners’ during the election campaign. I’m not sure if imposing absolute deadlines on our friends, before talks even start, is wise.

Gill, he is not changing the deal merely proposing that there should be no extension to the agreed leaving date.
I think we all know your views on a possible no deal brexit, and I think we leavers have similar concerns. But Boris is just establishing a negotiating position, one which might influence the EU to do a quick deal, and at least put some doubts into their minds as to whether he is serious or not. We just have to wait and see.
I dont believe TM ever set any deadlines, only kept repeating that Brexit means Brexit.

I'll take your word John that Theresa May didn't set any deadlines herself but deadlines were in place. It was government MP's who repeatedly rejected her withdrawal agreement. Her "Brexit means Brexit" slogan was the only deadline she could posibly have had when you consider she was never allowed to put deadlines into place, this was due to the obstructive nature of different political parties wanting their version of Brexit, or in the case of Remainers, no Brexit at all.

I acknowledge her task was made so much more difficult with her mistimed election call but putting that aside it was her tenacity throughout the Brexit process that has put Boris in a position to see it through to the end.

He should have been upfront about it during the election campaign. It was supposed to be oven ready, which implies, like he said, it can be slammed straight in the oven - no tweaking required.

I thought we were dropping the leave/remain thing now. We’re all in it together.

Since when was any party leader totally upfront in an election campaign, if he had been imagine the joy it would have brought to Laura Kuensberg et al, she would have worried him like a cat with a mouse.
I am sorry if my linguistic skills are not adequate enough to discuss pre election viewpoints without referring to leavers and remainers, I guess it will take a while before we begin to think about brexit being a common cause.
By the way I always assumed his oven ready quote referred to getting the withdrawal agreement bill through parliament, although the political declaration, or whatever its called is supposed to be the glide path to a free trade agreement, I hope the EU understand that Boris has switched the engines off and we are now aimed at the heart of the EU, and only they have the power to persuade him to switch the engines back on and achieve a smooth landing. :o 8-)

Oven ready is the starting point and is duly followed by a cooking process. It is possible to change temperatures and shelves etc at the last minute …. ditto with trade negotiations.
