The best bit was the reply "say something interesting" as if that's going to happen

My personal New Years Honour:- GillW awarded Dame of the Community for patient courage to calmly persevere with her beliefs in the face of an avalanche of disagreement. By the way Gill the motto of the award is 'Only dead fish float down stream'.
Now perhaps reconciliation can really begin.

My New Year's Resolution is to ignore this thread until something actually happens. Now the GE has happened and Bojo has a working majority there is no point in tearing each other apart speculating on what he might do. Whatever it is, he's going to do it, so let's wait and see.

Thank you Frank, I will cherish my honour, especially as it comes from you, who I have a great deal of respect for.Frank Manning wrote: 02 Jan 2020, 16:58My personal New Years Honour:- GillW awarded Dame of the Community for patient courage to calmly persevere with her beliefs in the face of an avalanche of disagreement. I'll carry on swimming!
I agree, there's nothing that can be done until we know what's going to happen. I hope that they push on with it now and don't procrastinate, as they have A LOT to do in a year.Mervyn and Trish wrote: 02 Jan 2020, 17:38My New Year's Resolution is to ignore this thread until something actually happens. Re: Brexit
So according to Ursula von der Leyen it will be "impossible" to get a trade deal by the end of the year - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-51028614 - why?
Am I missing something here? How difficult can it be? All our trading rules are aligned with the EU, so there is nothing to change. We are probably asking for zero tariffs, as will be the EU countries (not sure about the "EU")
The saying "where there is a will, there is a way" comes to mind. My suggestion - lock the negotiators in a room and don't let them out until the deal is done - simples.

Firstly, we are leaving the ‘club’. When you leave any club, you don’t continue to use the club on the same terms as members.
Secondly, there’s there’s no guarantee that our trading rules will stay the same. I could be wrong, but I thought Brexit was about getting away from the EU regulations and the Uk being free to make our own rules about how we want to regulate things. I didn’t think the ‘people’ wanted to be tied to EU trading rules.

Re: Brexit
Spot on Gill.
I think that they will negotiate bit by bit, industry by industry.
If agreement cannot be reached on a particular sector we will park it and move on to what can be agreed.
Very different from Mays approach.

Re: Brexit
Yes we are leaving the "club" but for trade with the EU, and any other country for that matter, the rules, which apply both ways, have to be in agreement. For example any fresh produce that is exported to the EU has to be of an agreed standard - we are already using those standards, unlike when Canada was negotiating an agreement and they had to comply.Gill W wrote: 09 Jan 2020, 17:52we are leaving the ‘club’. There is no reason, at least initially, why the EU would want to move the goalposts other than to be obstructive.

Re: Brexit
As regards goods Gill, our exporters will still need to conform to EU regulations, as indeed will EU firms exporting to us need their products to conform to UK standards. And since they both are currently conforming it really ought to be a piece of cake, for the majority.Gill W wrote: 09 Jan 2020, 17:52I think you are missing a couple of things.david63 wrote: 09 Jan 2020, 08:02So according to Ursula von der Leyen it will be "impossible" to get a trade deal by the end of the year - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-51028614 - why?
