I’ll drink to that.
The toast is ‘Hubris & folly’.

Let’s hope I’m wrong in my views and that it all works out well.

I thought this was rather apt from Laura Kuenssberg.

We are separate after more than 40 years, but remember much of the status quo will hold for now - the UK and the EU, the awkward couple, finally divorced - but still sharing a house and the bills.

Just another day and another month, lets hope that the 31st Dec passes as smoothly and unchanged.
Although I don't like the attitude of some EU politicians that a strong successful UK economy is not what they want to see close to their borders. Says everything about the EU's attitude to free trade, they much prefer a closed shop with massive state intervention.

Hopefully the EU may now get real in ongoing negotiations. Now they've failed to bully us into remaining. Never mind whether we need them more than they need us or vice versa. We are a major economy on their doorstep and there are huge opportunities in the new relationship for both of us. We've left the EU. We've not left Europe.

Listening to some people last night anyone would have thought we had taken Europe off the map, so much wailing and angst, candlelight vigils, for goodness sake...

Be interesting if Mrs Krankie tries to use rejoining the EU as a commitment if she gets independence. Even more interesting if the EU allowed her to do so or even made some post independence promise. That really would be interfering in the politics of a non EU sovereign state, i.e. the UK.

Not much chance there. Do the EU really want to take on another hanger on, I would not think Germany would be to pleased with another mouth feeding from the pot.

From what I have read Scotland would not fulfil the requirements to join the EU, under their current terms, in the foreseeable future - their economy is not in very good shape.

But if they leave the UK and lose the Barnett subsidy and with oil running out and not a viable future income stream it can only get worse in the long term

I have to say I am saddened and disappointed, but the 2016 referendum has now been delivered 100%.
Congratulations (he says through gritted teeth)

If an independent Scotland was allowed to rejoin the EU they would be the 22nd largest economy, after Croatia.

They would have 6 out of 726 MEPs in the European Parliament - 0.8% as opposed to 59 out of 650 MPs at Westminster - 9%

Where do they have the bigger voice ?

The good news would be that the EU would have to subsidise Scotland instead of the UK - sounds like a win, win to me

The Spanish would block their application on the basis that Catalan would then aim to take the same route.

Well well well. Yesterday's man Tusk (remember he is Mr Nobody now) has declared the EU would be empathetic towards Scotland rejoining. Once again he proves we were right to get out of this anti-democratic organisation as he demonstrates he is more than willing to meddle in the internal politics of a sovereign country.

Of course Spain and others may well feel differently in the face of their own internal issues. But good luck to the EU if they are willing to pick up the Scottish subsidy in place of the rest of the UK. Give them another border to worry about as well as Ireland too.

I still think , all arguments aside, IF there is a majority for another referendum and IF the majority vote to leave the UK, then that should be respected.
Any Scot who wished to remain in the UK should be welcomed in.
Btw, I also feel the same about the other UK countries.
Who wants anyone locked in when they don’t want to be..... EU ?

Barney, glad you showed it as a big if, just because the SNP think that a Scottish remain in the EU vote is a game changer does not make it so. I would imagine there is still a majority who realise Scotland would struggle as an independent nation, even without the problems of an EU border with England.

I agree. Their choice. Westminster would be better off without the SNP too!

The original article on the FT website says that a spokesman for Nissan said that ‘they’ve modelled every possible ramification for Brexit, and they fact remains that our entire business in the UK and EU is not sustainable in the event of WTO tariffs’.
