Something changed ??

Today when I go to a topic instead of seeing the first message I see the last
Is this something in settings ?

A number of tabs will appear at the top of the display when you click on ' User Control Panel ' ...

Specifically can you see ' Board Preferences ' ?

Using the above Panel … if you scroll down to ' Display Post Order Direction and flip to ' Ascending ' all should be well ?

Also try a "hard" refresh of your browser (Ctrl + F5 on most Windows browsers)

Yes / No ?

It was already set to Ascending
Changed to Descending and the latest was at the top.
Changed back to Ascending and did CTRL + F5

Tha latest was at the bottom but when I open a topic it goes to the latest (at the bottom) not the frst as previously.
Ideally it would go to first unread

How are you "opening" a topic?

Nothing has changed in respect of post order for years.

I see the list of recent topics and click on the one I want

The postings are in order with newest last but instaed of opening at the top of the list it opens at the last one.

I then have to scroll to the top of the page and click in first unread

It seems that this only happens when I select from Recent Topics

If I open the topic from the list of topics under a particular heading it acts correctly

That is normal behaviour and has always been like that.

If you want the first "unread" post then you should click on either the folder icon to the left of the topic or the red square on the left of the topic title.

Mine is behaving in the same way as johns describes. It has never behaved like that in the past. I am using Safari on a MacBookAir.
