Did you know that with an open fire up to 60% of the heat in your nice warm lounge goes up the chimney and that ( as seen on Dragon's Den ) one could purchase a ' Chimney Umbrella ' to prevent this happening.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

You would have thought the judge could have awarded him a chip off the old blockStephen wrote: 29 Mar 2020, 09:56Good try thoughKendhni wrote: 29 Mar 2020, 09:07On 'acquired wood. A motorist was in court for dangerous driving. He had had an accident and knocked down a telegraph pole (remember them). He was fined for driving plus made to pay to replace the telegraph pole. The motorist then made a plea that if he was paying for the new pole then he should be able to have the old one (thinking he could mitigate his losses by chopping it up and selling it for fire wood).
The judge rejected his request saying 'you cannot acquire telegraph poles simply by knocking them down'.![]()

Two weeks ago today was the last time I went out to meet friends and the day I started an “isolation diary”. Hopefully will be interesting reading at the end of this situation. I am venturing out this morning to my local M&S for happy hour with oldies like me

Tell me about it, ref deliveries Jan. I think we've registered for just about every main supermarket that is around here but not a slot to be had. So Mrs S will have to run the gauntlet later in the week.
This isn't me having a go personally at you Jan.
I understand about distancing from other people, but I'm trying to get my head around this self isolation. Yes, I understand the reasons if you have symptoms, of course you don't want to get any worse or pass it on. But if for whatever reason you decide to self isolate for two weeks just because you think it's best, what's to say the moment you step out the door and go to the shop/s as you mentioned you contract the virus. It makes the two week isolation pointless.
Just my thought you understand.

I’ve struggled myself with some of the messages that the government have put out these past few weeks, especially those concerning essential workers (who are who aren’t)
Self-Isolation, is for me a little easier to get my head around…. just my view Stephen…. if your self-isolate with no underlying conditions than that is your choice… bearing in mind the government are asking all none essential workers to do the same, other than for food shopping, medication collection and looking after a dependent relative. I agree…should you choose to self-isolate as a matter of choice but then decide to go out after two weeks for Shopping etc then you are suseptable as anyone else of getting infected…less so if you don on your Germ warfare gear.
I hope that helps
I trust you and your good wife will be using the “special persons” shopping hour to do your Shopping?

It's everyone's choice wether they completely self isolate or not. The point I was making was, do some people think that once they have self isolated for the current one or two weeks they are then immune to the virus.
I expect Mrs S will be using the one hour shopping slot for NHS staff, especially as most stores are operating it now.

Hi Stephen - I understand where you are coming from with the self isolation rules - for my part I am self isolating purely because of age - over 70 - I don't have any underlying conditions but my main worry is not contaminating my 97 year old mother. She is totally dependent on my sister and myself as I've mentioned before so we have as little contact with her as possible and just drop off shopping etc - don't hang around. However as I said earlier I have to shop albeit only when I run out of today fruit/veg/bread so took advantage of M&S 'happy hour' for people like me which I believe is allowed. There was a queue this morning - markers to keep people apart in the store and arrows to follow although one woman in particular couldn't follow that basic rule so kept crossing people's paths
. At checkout again the distance rules applied but you are right there is every chance of picking up the virus if you don't follow the rules - I wiped my hands when I got in the car then washed them again and all the goods I bought with soap and water when I came in. I've been around wiping door handles - everything I've touched - I don't know what else I can do - I don't anticipate going out again to the shops for a couple of weeks and don't have anybody coming into the house. For people with life threatening conditions it must be a nightmare

Is it just me but.....
We have a lot of fit and able people currently laid off from work, including self employed, many of whom have serious financial concerns.
On the other hand a newspaper, in of course a politically impartial and unhyped fashion, has suggested there may fresh food shortages diue to a shortage of foreign workers to harvest crops, caused by Brexit and Coivid travel restrictions.
Am I the only person who can see an obvious win win solution?

On the self isolating question we are as far as possible staying at home. Of course when you do go out after say 14 days you are at risk. But normally we'd be out most days so once every week or two is less risky than that. And with others doing the same it is a lot less crowded so again the risk is reduced.
As I understand it on average each person catching this is infecting 2.5 others so the number infected doubles every few days. But if by self isolating and distancing we can reduce that average infection to lless than 1 then over time the number carrying it will fall and intimately it will die out for now at least. It can only survive for a few days at most on surfaces. It needs people to enable it to survive and multiply.

Like you Merv I am normally out and about every day seeing people so not to go out except for a walk where I am on my own and steer clear of people and a fortnightly shop will I hope help this situation.Mervyn and Trish wrote: 30 Mar 2020, 11:26On the self isolating question we are as far as possible staying at home. Me, my wife and our daughter are self isolating........We appear to be more fortunate than most in that we can get home deliveries in this area.......especially so now that farm shop outlets have come onboard.Mervyn and Trish wrote: 30 Mar 2020, 11:26On the self isolating question we are as far as possible staying at home. We have managed to get three Sainsbury's deliveries thus far. They are restricting delivery to once per week but it seems to be getting easier overall ( in our part of Darzet ar least ) cos I am even getting emails to advise slot availability.
I also note that there is a special number for folks who live in Wales, Scotland and N Ireland to ring …

More chance of winning the lottery than getting a delivery round here. Never mind at least my chainsaw and accompaniments have arrived. Might be a bit chewy though

I cut my finger just from the bl**dy thing rolling over gently after putting together and the chain caught me. And it wasn't even plugged in. Anyway, just ordered some ear defenders as I find it very noisy. And as I suffer with titinus as I call it I want to hang on to my hearing for a while longer.

My husband managed to get an over 65's Iceland delivery today.... but half the items weren't in stock. So I'm still going to Sainsbury's tomorrow, but at least won't have to spend as much time in there.

We had a Sainsbugs 16:00 - 17:00 delivery today but the items were picked pre 08:00, we had everything bar two items and a substitute. The point being that they seem to have the stocks nicely shelved for the ' vulnerable ' so arrive early would be my advice.Gill W wrote: 30 Mar 2020, 16:25My husband managed to get an over 65's Iceland delivery today.... but half the items weren't in stock.
