Re: Current Affairs
Believe the government or should it be the Press. From my dealings with the Press I know which one I would rather believe. Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story comes to mind.Gill W wrote: 20 Apr 2020, 12:23
Equally, it can be be said that some people believe everything the government say.

Re: Current Affairs
The Sun led with the headline today Pubs closed until Xmas.
Nowhere has it been stated in official sources that this would be the case.
So basically, they made it up.
Good journalism
A journalist said on TV this morning that given the government reluctance to publish an exit plan, it was their job to speculate.
Really ?
There was a time when they reported a story not created it.

Re: Current Affairs
Two stories about the honesty of the press.
First the Sun. When I was at the BBC in Stoke they ran a really good story about a local family. Trying to follow it up I looked them up in the phone book. They weren't in it. So I got a local press agency who had more resources than me onto it, with the promise of the usual payment if they could get a decent follow up story. 24 hours later they called me back. The family didn't exist. The story was entirely fictional. But not overly important.
Secondly, and much more significant, when I worked for the NHS the Sunday Times rang me with allegations made by a "junior doctor" that one of our consultants was overdosing seriously ill patients with morphine to kill them off and free beds. I checked with the consultant. I checked with our medical director. I checked with the Royal College of Physicians. I found out that the treatment being given was exactly in line with the agreed national and international protocols for the condition. Yes some patients had died, because they were terminally ill. In spite of, not because of, the treatment. In line with national expectations for such seriously ill people. And importantly the "junior doctor" was not technically a junior doctor. She had been fired by us. She had also been fired by her previous hospital. Because in spite of her inexperience she failed to follow instructions and was endangering patients. She had a serious grudge against our consultant. She had left the profession. So I told the Sunday Times all that. Yes, they said. We know all that. But we're still running the story but we will add your side of it. The allegation, with no qualification about the true status of the ex-Junior Doctor ran prominently on the front page. Our rebuttal got a couple of column inches buried inside.

Very interesting Merv but when I saw Gill's posting I wasn't sure if it was a joke or a correctionMervyn and Trish wrote: 20 Apr 2020, 16:20Two stories about the honesty of the press.

Re: Current Affairs
So many times we read about something that’s happening in Prison, the newspaper running the story claim ‘ from a prison source ‘ what they mean is some Con with a mobile phone has called them and claimed xyz, they never check with the establishment to see if it’s correct. Like I say, only believe the date on the front.

I wonder how many fake experts there are on social media giving their opinion as fact. They can't all be working for the Times newspaper group!!!

Re: Current Affairs
Getting away from CV19 etc I have just bought some more shares in Carnival whilst they are cheap. I paid just over £900 including fees so we'll just have to sit back and hope they recover to the heady heights of yore.
Next job is to look for a luxury yacht and villa in the Bahamas just in case!!!
Must admit it's almost as exciting as getting a delivery slot from Asda!!!

I have placed buy orders for both RCI and CCL, but at a lower price than current - I am kicking myself I didn't purchase at £6.00.oldbluefox wrote: 20 Apr 2020, 17:13Getting away from CV19 etc I have just bought some more shares in Carnival whilst they are cheap. Re: Current Affairs
I bought 200 when they were just under £8 and when they double in price I will offload 100 and then I will have 100 free shares.

Re: Current Affairs
For anybody thinking of investing in Carnival shares (or others) now seems a good opportunity whilst they are low. I paid £1250 for my first Carnival shares which eventually went up to £4000 (ish) pre CV19 but I have had a good deal of OBC and dividends from them so have been very happy with the returns.

Re: Current Affairs
Carnival dividends have been suspended. My guess is that there will not be any dividends for at least a year, maybe two.

Must admit I would agree. I always feel a bit uncomfortable when the old ‘I bought shares when 3 beans got you a cow’ followed by a summary of all the OBC accrued over the years ( my, what a lot of cruises you’ve been on, Granny.) I remember the years of Carnival giving £0 dividend and always mentioned it posts.Manoverboard wrote: 20 Apr 2020, 17:58I'm thinking of deleting all these money grabbing posts, all way off Topic ... just saying![]()
I do feel sorry for those who invested £5k only a few months ago.
