Early to bed early to rise....

Unread post by Onelife »

…isn’t something I practise and probably the reason why I’m neither healthy wealthy or wise.

I generally take myself off to bed between 11pm and midnight and rise around 8.30 am…that being said I rarely get more than 4 hours solid sleep due to...well i won't bore you with that.

So how dose your body clock work and if you are healthy, wealthy and wise perhaps we could become good friends.

One of the joys of retirement is that on most days (pretty much all days at the moment) we are not ruled by the clock and can go to bed when we're tired and get up when we wake.

In our case that's not much different from you OL on bed time. And we usually wake at about the same time in the morning.

However, with our desperately full diary, that usually means to get up, let the cat and dog out for a wee and then feed them, and then make a cup of tea and retire back to bed with it to read for an hour, accompanied by the dog, who by now needs another kip.

Wealth seems to have passed us by too if you count it in cash terms. If you count it in happiness we are millionaires (most days anyway!)

My ancestors must have been moths cos I wake up when it starts to get light, regardless of the time of year or what time we went to bed. Like Merv said we go to bed when we want to ... so there :P .

I normally go to bed between 11.30pm and midnight, and get up somewhere between 8am and 9am.

I'm not a morning person, but I do find it easier to get up earlier in the summer. On dark winter mornings I can easily sleep until 9.30am or later.

Ho ho

Mind you I was woken at 3 am last night by a woman banging on the door. I had to get up and let her out.

We go to bed at 10pm, but I do then watch TV for an hour. I wake at 5.30 and browse or read, and we get up about 7.30. But often I sleep very badly anyway, so wake on and off all night.

I'm afraid that Sue to some extent chooses bed time. From about 8.30pm Sue starts saying that she is very tired and mostly she goes to bed by 9.15. From that time I get a few plaintive calls of "dont be too late". Consequently I am in bed by about 10 to 10.30. However Sue is very intolerant of the slightest irritation in bed and fidgets for ages if woken, which keeps me awake. I very rarely get more than 2 three hours long sleeps. Lockdown has made things worse, because we dont get our bridge evenings with our cruise friends. They at least kept Sue up until 11.30 by which time she was genuinely tired enough to sleep soundly. One of us makes tea at about 6.30 am and then we do Times codeword before we get up. All riveting stuff.

Onelife, it could be that going to bed later suits your body clock (functions) more. It works for me mostly.

I rarely go up to bed before 11 pm and then read for an hour or until I really can't keep my eyes open but don't sleep well - I wake up throughout the night and lately wake around 6'ish and often make myself a cuppa and bring it back up to bed and turn the tv on and look at the iPad to see what's going on in the world. I find myself more irritable and down since lockdown - it really is no fun living on your own :( However having said that I am nervous about any lifting of restrictions - another thing to keep me awake at night

Isn't it strange, I only read recently an article saying how lying awake at night thinking about things makes problems seem many times bigger than they are, and that is so right, come the morning and you think why on earth was I so worried!

Bed 10 /10.30. Sleep like a log. Up 06.30, make tea and coffee back for another hour. Start the day.
Been retired 10 years still get up same time as when working.
Don't worry, be happy

Watching TV immediately before sleep is said to be bad for you. Maybe that's why you sleep badly ?

Don't laugh everyone (you will). We had single beds on our honeymoon. I was very naive and didn't know that there is a difference between double and twin beds. Even 57 years later we are not going back to that. I could tell you a few stories about a hotel honeymoon with single beds. But I won't. 😈

I'll tell you one of mine and you can tell us one of yours

The kids were very small at the time and holidays were few and far between but we had lashed out for a child friendly Hotel in Boscombe, the Broughty Ferry ? We were all in the same room and when it was time to go to bed we left the bar and crept in so as not to wake them up. All going smoothly so far ; cleaned teeth, slipped into jim-jams, tippitoed to the bed and gazelle like silently slipped in under the sheets. What happened next can only be described as a bomb going off .... the bed had broken off the wall and collapsed in a heap on the floor. This was followed by frantic knocking on the door and the arrival of most of the Hotel staff to see what on earth was going on. We stood there like a couple of lemons twiddling our thumbs while ‘ Maintenance ‘ re-built the bed, bid their farewells and shut the door. The kids meanwhile were still fast asleep.

Now it’s your turn

It’s exactly the same if I don’t watch it.
