The Grand National

Unread post by Onelife »

So who will be your fancy for the 2013 Grand National?

Thankfully it’s not very often that I have to say I’m down before they’ve even jumped the first fence but unfortunately my ant-post bet (Beshabar) didn’t make the line up due to having sustained a fetlock injury...apologies to anyone who took my advice and backed it.

Not a race to put your shirt on but nevertheless millions will be wagered on what for many will be their only bet of the year.

It could be argued that selecting the winner of this race is no easier now than it was when “lottery” won way back in 1839, however I think the more knowledgeable horse racing enthusiast would say the present day National isn’t the test it was...something I would agree with but nevertheless still a test of both horse and jockey.Taking this into consideration I’ll be looking for a selection which has a bit of class about it...especially so now that the ground has come up good, good/soft.

It is for this reason I have selected three horses that meet this criteria...

(Colbert Station)...looks to have all the right credentials for a race like this... very well weighted, jumps well and could have the advantage of Tony McCoy in the saddle.

(On his Own)...Excellent trainer in W Mullins so one that shouldn’t be dismissed lightly.

(Across the Bay) live outsider who has the beating of many of the runners but often doesn’t come up with the goods.

The link below should give you all the information you need to make your selections.

Hadn't taken your advice (yet) Keefy but only because even though I have nagged him OH hadn't done the bet for me, then heard last week Beshabar had been withdrawn so whilst I would have backed it I would never have got the good odds you had.

I like your selections because:

a) Colbert Station has McCoy riding him ...good price considering who the jockey is.

b) On his Own , well whenever I go to the races knowing absolutely nothing about the gee gee's I very often look at a name that I can connect to in some way and this just happens to have some significance.

c) Across the Bay, worth a tenner each way just for the good odds.

I shall go with your choices because I know you know what you are talking about plus if I lose all my hard earned cash I can moan like hell at you on here for the next year

I am indeed Keefy :D and it would be even more had I gone each way but I'm an "all or nothing" type of gal and just like the fun of race days, always go with £xx I'm prepared to lose and anything else is a bonus

A horse collapsed and died at the 11th fence in the first race today. I can't watch Aintree racing as there are always fatalities.

1st (35) Auroras Encore 66/1

2nd (18) Cappa Bleu 12/1

3rd (10) Teaforthree 10/1

4th (19) Oscar Time 66/1

Well I didn’t see that one coming but congratulation to the connections of the winner... Auroras Encore...and of course anyone who backed it...did you?

As for my selections only Across the Bay gave a good account of itself, the other two succumbed to the fences...Ah well, they’ll all be back in their stables this evening which makes losing so much easier to bear

As they say...One minute you’re up the next you’re down. Grand National Jockey Ryan Mania was air lifted to Newcastle Hospital this afternoon after a fall from his mount Stagecoach Jasper....initial reports say that he has sustained serious back and neck injuries....hopefully we’ll have better news of his condition tomorrow.

Great news about Grand National Jockey Ryan Mania....he is expected to leave Hospital today having sustained what was thought to have been serious back and neck injuries, thankfully this didn’t prove to be the case....He even said he hopes to be back in the saddle by the weekend.
They’re a tough bunch these Jockeys...I was listening to jockey Tony McCoy talking about some of the injuries he’d sustained...one of which was a fracture to his back... which required pinning....he rode his next winner 8 weeks later.
