I can’t find my crystal ball so I’ve had to throw some bran flakes on the floor to come up with my next prediction…“we won’t be easing lockdown on the 4th July”. If my reading of the European infection rate situation is correct then we should be hearing from Boris early next week.

Reading the latest ONS report, it does seem that infections may not be reducing so much now.. It’s not surprising either what people going back to work, protests, and now this lunacy on the beaches.

But, I can’t see them saying that the lockdown easing should stop, as it would be an embarrassing U turn and I also believe they are more interested in the economy and not saving lives.

One good thing I’ve noticed is that there is a solid rump of people who are not intending to break their personal lockdowns, so there is a quiet band of sensible people out there.

From what I have read there are several "estimates" of the R value and the Government takes the average - so yes it is quite likely that at least one of them show at above 1, but that measure may always have been higher than some of the others.

Basically it is "guesswork" because any measure of R is an estimate/guess as there is no precise way to measure it without testing the whole population every day and even then because of differing rates of infection it would still be an estimate - albeit more accurate than the current system.

I don't think that we, well certainly me, are under any illusion that worldwide the pandemic is anywhere near over and that in the Americas it is running out of control - mainly due to "ostrich syndrome"

I've looked at the new figures in the app. The total number of cases is an extrapolation based on the number of reports received through the app. In a few areas the estimate of R is above 1. However the confidence intervals very wide so they are only estimates. That is why they quote a range. It's not guesswork. It is a proper statistical calculation and noone can give a more precise answer. The more significant figure in the app for me is a steady and significant fall in the total number of new cases each day.
