Presumably, as you are still here, the switchover went OK

Have you done a speed test Moby to check BT have lived up to their promise?Manoverboard wrote: 29 Jun 2020, 18:37Latest update ....
As the switchover date got ever closer ( tomorrow ) and BT's letters more threatening, like losing one's Broadband, and their Help Desk still giving me conflicting advice I decided that we have to have an Internet Service to be able to eat let alone a myriad of other things so this afternoon I reluctantly plugged it in and successfully installed it. Upon completion the Hub Manager software advised that it would automatically switch over at midnight and that some disruption to service may be experienced tomorrow but still no mention of a need for access.
Perhaps I should insist on the engineer wearing a face mask etc and to present a one day old test certificate but now is not the moment to be awkward.

It's working just fine but how do I tell if I'm connected to the exchange via a copper wire or a fibre cable

Download 20.83 / Upload 5.11
BT advised that they will advise speeds after it all settles down at their end and it also seems we have been moved to a different exchange, one that is maybe 50 miles away

There are two fibre services FTTP : Fibre to the premises - unless they have been to your house and put fibre optic cable in, very unlikely, you will be copper to the nearest fibre hub on the FTTC service - Fibre to the cabinet.Manoverboard wrote: 30 Jun 2020, 09:13It's working just fine but how do I tell if I'm connected to the exchange via a copper wire or a fibre cable![]()
Were you told what speeds to expect after the upgrade ?
www.speedtest.net will tell you what you are getting.
I find it best to run the test two or three times with different servers.

Re: BT Broadband Upgrade ...
I have just done a speed test on my machine and I have download of 45 and upload of 18 up here in the sticks so I would imagine once they have fully connected you you should be getting much better speeds than that. Not that I'm any expert on internet speeds but I would hope you will be doing better than snail pace by the end of the day. Good luck!!!!Manoverboard wrote: 30 Jun 2020, 09:22

Here's a link to another speed test checker that enables you to enter your postcode and compare your speed with that of others in your region plus the speeds of others on your ISP: https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest

Download should be somewhere in the 40s - upload around 8, and those are worse case scenarios. I know that whenever you get a new service/router BT claim that it takes about a week to "settle down".
One quick question - do you still have plug in filters on all of your phone sockets?

I can never understand what all the 'settle down bit' is. They make it sound like there's someone on tread mill knocking out a set power and once they get the hang of it it'll 'settle down'.Manoverboard wrote: 30 Jun 2020, 09:22I have now, thanks for the thoughttowny44 wrote: 30 Jun 2020, 09:09Have you done a speed test Moby to check BT have lived up to their promise?![]()

These days it is not a simple "switch" and all is done there are a lot of "boxes" involved and part of the settling down is in getting the load on the boxes balanced out and optimised. Basically if you have 200 users going through one box in the exchange they are going to get a slower speed than another box with only 100 users so they need to switch some users so that there are 150 on each box. But that is further complicated by the fact that the number of users varies during the day.

' Speednet ' records near enough the same numbers as I provided earlier.
Actually I am perfectly happy to wait until BT advise what speeds should be applicable to us but given that the last time I did any sort of test we were only at six dot something and that our upgrade is free ... should I complain, probably not.
Thanks for all the extra info everybody, bar the feller with a puppy of course

Re: BT Broadband Upgrade ...
From discussions I have had with engineers there is also a routine automatic check on each line for stability, and if it regularly "drops out" the line speed is reduced until it stabilise. Which is one reason to routinely check your speed and if its lower than expected refer it to your provider, Sky has an on line check system to do this, and I am currently checking mine because the download speed has dropped to the same or only slightly better than the upload about 15mbs each, when I should be getting up 55mbs download, but nornally 30-40mbs.david63 wrote: 30 Jun 2020, 10:24I tend to agree with, up to a point.Stephen wrote: 30 Jun 2020, 09:56I can never understand what all the 'settle down bit' is. Then at some point you will need to get the main terminal upgraded to one that incorporates a filter and then remove all the others. This, I believe, will affect not only the line speed but the quality of the line.Manoverboard wrote: 30 Jun 2020, 10:44We do indeed, on all of them, and the router is connected to one of them

Hence the need to enter the property presumably .... so now I do have a choice and that is to let them in with the very small potential risk involved else to continue to run at a speed that is not entirely unacceptable to us given our present usage. I'll just have to miss Amazon's ' Prime ' PL footy.

You dont even need to sign up, just download the prime video app and it's free to use. I only watched it on my phone, my TV is not all that smart, I understand some enable you to download the apps, whereas I would need to transfer it from my phone or tablet.Manoverboard wrote: 30 Jun 2020, 12:06Ooooh, do you think so, I may be inclined to sign up for just the one month thentowny44 wrote: 30 Jun 2020, 11:32Your current speed is more than adequate to stream Amazon prime footie.Manoverboard wrote: 30 Jun 2020, 11:02
