Sadly this crisis confirms just how useless the EU are. Instead of providing decisive leadership and guidance they're complaining about countries taking their own decisions in the best interest of their citizens rather than defending pointless EU principles. And no doubt behind closed doors they're still arguing about the best shape for a banana (that last bit was satire by the way).

But he did talk about 3rd country national whose work permit had expired, presumably EU nationals will have the same rights as Maltese nationals, and would not require a work permit?

There are literally thousands and thousands of Eastern European workers in Malta now John, mainly in the hotel industry.
Given that 15% of Malta’s GDP is tourism and another 15% is online gambling, I fear that they will take a bigger hit than many other countries.

Without the tourists and sporting events, they are very worried.
I think that when push comes to shove, they will try to ship out EU nationals as well as they don’t have a robust social system.

I see Michele Barnier has the virus. While he is not my favourite person I wish him a full and speedy recovery.

I don't think Brexit will be Bojo's legacy now. I think his record as a PM will hinge on his handling of CV19. For me I'm not seeing the clown anymore but someone who is handling himself with dignity and authority.

Did he? Since you say he ran his entire campaign on this basis I presume it must have been in the manifesto. Can you tell me where you found it?
My understanding is he ran the campaign on getting us out of the EU with or without a deal so this is news to me.

I think I will await the BBC mini series that must be due out sometime in the next 2 years, or perhaps I should wait for the Channel 5 version, which might be more to my taste as I suspect Viacom is a bit more right wing.

There's only one issue with channel 5. Their production is shoddy. We've started watching some of their documentaries after a charity I'm involved with was briefly involved in one of their programmes. And the fact checking and continuity is abysmal. Even on topics on which I'm no expert I'm spotting glaring errors. Which makes me wonder how many there are I don't spot. For example when the voiceover pronounces the name of someone featured in two different ways you know they can't both be right. Or a place name changes. Such as Claverton/Calverton.

All that is now left to agree a trade deal or not as the case may be.

One of our Danish suppliers has asked if we will take next Spring collection in late December in case of no agreement and tariffs.
We’ve agreed as long as they defer payment.

Many EU countries are very worried about losing the lucrative and very profitable U.K. market.

Now we are past the point of no return, minds will be focused.
Both parties need to move a bit on current stance.

My SIL who was seconded onto working at the Brexit department (now closed) told me their biggest worry was the ‘level playing field’

It might be totally unfair and unlikely, but I do rather like the idea of making the EU car industry pay compensation to the UK car industry because the idiots in Brussels would not agree a deal.

The oven ready was talking about the Withdrawal Agreement not a trade deal.

I think it’s increasingly looking like an agreement will not be reached unless both sides move a bit.
National sovereignty dictates that the U.K. cannot sign a no regression pact as it would tie the hands of any future government for ever.
We can move on fishing, for example agreeing a three or five year deal.
ECJ is the toughest one. I cannot see movement on that.
We could never allow a foreign court to over rule our own.

I was due to renew mine in August as it runs out in January and we were cruising in October, alas that isn’t now happening till the end of May,hopefully.I would have lost 5/6 months off the old one, I won’t bother now till April and get the nice new shiny British blue one.Albeit made in France.!

The French company that won the contract have subcontracted it out.

When the contract was placed there was no choice but to include EU firms in the tender process. Rules is rules. Hopefully when it comes up for renewal we will stipulate it has to be a UK firm that gets the deal.

TM could have cited national security and kept the work at De La Rue who made them for years.
They lost the contract purely on price and have since laid people off.
As I said, the company that won the contract have since subbed out to a Polish company employing low paid Ukrainians.

Albeit many moons ago I visited the De La Rue factory in Leeds and the security they placed around the Green Shield Stamps that they were producing at that time had to be seen to be believed, meanwhile one could just stroll around the umpteen pallets of uncut foreign currency at leisure ... I do agree that the passports should have been retained in the UK, we must have known we were going to leave later if not sooner so what could they do if we decided so to do ... fine us perhaps ?
