It seems that tourists in Mallorca are disregarding all the efforts that the Spanish have put in.
I’ve read reports of young Brits, Germans and Swedes all going out on the lash and forgetting what it’s all about.
The authorities are displeased.
Can’t say I blame em.

I also saw the question why shops and not bars and restaurants? Sometimes I wonder how these people manage to put their pants on in the morning.

I thought it was that you wore your mask until you got to your table, and put it on again if you had to leave the table for any reason, like going to the loo.

Thinking about it, it may be what they have to do in Spain, but it seems reasonable, so I'm adopting that approach.
I think you're right. The people I refer to might appear just asking a naive question in this case. But they're generally the same ones who claim the government supported by the media has hyped the crisis and exaggerated the numbers in order to control the people and the virus is actually nor a problem. The question was more along the lines of if it doesn't apply in bars I won't be wearing one in shops.

If I was a bar owner in Majorca, I would only be interested in my survival. Let the young fill their boots and my till. Hopefully they will be hope before the virus hits them

To Gill W and Barney

Thank you both for your very helpful replies. Hempstead sounds very attractive but is too far for me to get there.
As you say I shall build up gradually to a visit to Bluewater. The good thing is that there is nothing I really need as most of my summer stuff is fairly unworn due to going nowhere! It's just a good place (or was ) to meet a pal, have a shop and a bite of lunch. The cinema was also a good place to meet one of my pals who lives in Orpington. We could meet up enjoy a film and have a meal. Oh well...............maybe sometime soon.

Thanks again

Best wishes

Maureen

I’m not trying to be contrary but I quite like it…perhaps it would have been better without the raised fist as a plaque denoting how others suffered at the hands of slavery would have sent the same message.

If there was going to be anything there I would have thought a statue depicting slaves would have been less provocative and more appropriate. I wonder if the council will accept it?

I, on the other hand, hope it gets chopped up and thrown into the sea ... statues of protesters is all we need, the little darlings will all be wanting one

When you think how long it took for Bomber Command to be accepted by our own bloody governments and a statue erected to those brave men, what makes any respectable person think it’s ok to erect a statue of a protester a month after the protests.beggars belief.

I’m not really bothered either way but I do think it fitting that a statue that portrays a towns part in slavery is a better than one which glorifies a towns fortunes made out of slavery.

I think provocative actions like this will damage their cause in the minds of the majority of moderate people and encourage violent action by the right wing nutters and potential confrontations.

But it happened so long ago that surely we should all be big enough to accept it as part of history, and learn from it rather than just dump it in the sea.

The NF will probably be along with their paint brushes before the hacksaws... would be my guess….as for the council…they will certainly think twice before having it removed….perhaps they should ask what the towns people think?

Whoever erected the statue was obliged to get permission from the Council before it was erected therefore the Council can take it down whenever they like ... legally.

Tins are made of steel. They are usually ‘tinned’ but occasionally chromium oxide.

I think if you read my post again Moby you’ll see that the baked bean tins I was referring to were from the statue dumped in the sea.

P.s could you possibly tell David…. Bronze is harder than copper as a result of alloying that metal with tin or other metals  :D

Why would you describe someone who objects to the glorification of a law breaker a 'right wing extremist; or a 'right wing nutter'??

There are those who will object to the glorification of a law breaker and express their objection by lawful means and there are those who will use whatever means they can muster to provoke violence or cause trouble. They exist on both sides of the divide. I think this is what is meant by extremists and nutters.
