The late Baroness Thatcher.

Unread post by Boris+ »

Sadly the death of Baroness Thatcher has now been announced.

Whether you admired her or disliked her or her policies - she was British to the core, and she did her best for her country.

I crossed posted with you Boris and have deleted my thread to leave a single thread

Whether you like her or not she played a massive part in reshaping Britain at the end of the last century and providing one of the longest periods of sustained growth in our history. Was she solely responsible for the downfall of our manufacturing industry; or, as is more likely, the damage was done in the seventies by the unions, low quality work force and poor management?

Sadly I believe much of peoples recollection is tainted by how they prospered under her leadership ... those that grasped and embraced the changes did well those that struggled with change and remained in the past did not do so well ... but she was often used as a scapegoat for other peoples failings, weaknesses and lack of ability.

Maggie ...

I enjoyed the period of Poll Tax and certainly admired your ability to succeed in a male dominated arena, didn't agree with everything you said and did though.

... RIP
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

Love her or hate her I believe she did a lot for this Country, I certainly don't think there has been a PM to touch her since she left office.

RIP Maggie.

Even more sad than the Lady's demise is the prospect of the media frenzy we are going to have to endure for the next couple of weeks !

it will be a day in the sun for all the limp, weak ,willed people to come and out and have a go, shame they didn't have the balls for it when she was in government

it will be weeks of the usual Maggie bashing from the wimps and fanfares from her supporters, there seems to be little middle ground and objectivity, some of the stuff on facebook is appauling.

Very sad news, one the best Prime Ministers this country has had, may she RIP.

The prime minister, who is cutting short his trip to visit European leaders, said: "It was with great sadness that I learned of Lady Thatcher's death. We've lost a great leader, a great prime minister and a great Briton."

Downing Street has said Thatcher's funeral will take the same form as that for the Queen Mother and princess Diana.

Yes, Delboy - a very sad day. Above all I think maybe we should also remember that she was a mother - and there's not much that is worse than the death of a mother.

She was a lady of her time, one who looked for consensus then did exactly what she thought was right, as is the trait of all great Prime Ministers.

I dare say those who once held a pick and a shovel in their hands may have a different opinion of her.

Shame about the poll tax....she was right about that too.

RIP Maggie, you served your time well.

The lady who ruined towns, destroyed lives and the reason why gas and electric bills are so high for the average person now.

Whilst I do not celebrate her death, I despise what she did to this Country British through and through never, selfish through and through yes.

Ruined all the Industries in this country, robbed the children of their milk and was Americas lacky.

Sorry I do not believe that she should have a special funeral.

The Falklands saved her and in the end even her 'friends' in government realised exactly what she was like.

The first prime minister to use spin, the softening of Maggie.

Very true Em ..she was a mother, I met Carol Thatcher years ago on QE2, another one ...you love her or loathe her but I found her a very fun loving lady and very interesting, had a very fun day with her in a bar in Bermuda !!

Funnily enough I was sorting through some cruise things a few days ago and found the passenger list that listed CT , of course you don't get things like that today ..data protection and all that , I wonder if someone, somewhere has one and sees my name and thinks ...oh yes !!  I doubt it

Boris I have read this on another forum, from somebody who served in the Falklands.

"
Very sad news indeed. I had the great pleasure of meeting her on July 21st 1982. She shook my hand and said " You have all done very well indeed but remember what your families have been through too". Not said as a Prime Minister but as a mother. I will never forget that meeting."

Yes she was a mother, and I am sure for her children today is a very sad day.

John, as another Chesterfield resident I can understand where you are coming from, well no I probably can't but as a labour controlled area for many years I do understand that many will "blame" Mrs T for the demise of the mining industry especially in Derbyshire.

My brother was a miner ( in Doncaster ) and tbh I applaud her because thanks to her she got him out of the "pits" if you want to blame anyone blame the Unions , Scargill and people like him tried to hold this Country to ransom and Mrs T had the b***s to stand up to them, I know many people who have gone on to better things as a result of this, people like Scargill will always have his followers, our local news tonight supports that but lambs to the slaughter all of them, people like Scargill are only interested in one person and that is "number one" !!!

Maybe the Falklands did save her but how many other PM's would have had the b***s to do what she did, very few I would think and I don't believe she was anyone's lackie !!!

IMHO she was a great leader who temporarily put the "Great" back into this country's name. She broke the power of the union, which was long overdue.

The lady did make mistakes though. However, how many of us can put our hands on our hearts and say we've never made mistakes?

Jo,
I am not nor ever have been a political person however I do care about people. I worked for British Steel during the steel strike, but got dispensation to work so that the pensioners could get paid.
I have seen towns and peoples lives destroyed by what Thatcher did and they have still not recovered.
Look at areas around Chesterfield , Shirebrook, Bolsover they have not recovered yet.
Look at Stockton on Tees, Scunthorpe destroyed by Thatcher.

What industry is there in Chesterfield now, all gone.

I have no respect for Scargill, he was exactly the same as Thatcher just cared about himself and building his own empire.

The rich got richer and the poor poorer under Thatcher.

Selling off of council houses means that we now have more homeless than ever.

I personally have not been affected by her politics, but I know loads of families that have.
Are we setting a pecedence now , will Tony Blair get the same sort of Funeral?
I doubt it.
