Fly Tipping

Unread post by Stephen »

Did anyone else read the piece in today's Saturday Mail about the fly tipper who had his 400 tyres returned to his house/driveway from the farmer who caught his vehicle in CCTV.

Brilliant  , and about time these people that blight our landscape had a tast of they're own medicine.

Shame the farmers and councils can't catch them more often. Where we walk our dog we often see things dumped at the side of the road it's a quiet road leading to a pedestrian/cycle path no houses. Sometimes we start our walk and it's clean and when we return to the car there's a pile of rubbish (often builders/DIY waste) So I say well done to the farmer

The council make all the right noises about fly tippers, but when it comes down to it they won't bother going through all the hassle of trying to catch them and it all dragging through the courts. They'll can clear it up themselves and just past the cost onto the council tax payer.

That's not altogether true if it happens to be on a public footpath - there some very strong powers over public footpaths and the council will take action. Over the years I have reported several breaches of public footpath rules.

All councils aren't the same, even if they should be.

Fly tippers and illegal traveller sites are a scourge, and quite often the same.

Covert cameras are so discreet nowadays (and cheap) that I find it difficult to believe they are not more widely used to catch fly tippers in the act on known blackspots. We have a track nearby which is regularly targeted but nothing seems to change. From the waste deposited it seems to be the same person, usually kitchen/bathroom renovation waste. It's a disgusting habit, love the DM article!!

Most councils fork out many hundreds of thousands cleaning up after fly tippers…most of which is of their own making imo…..the problem of fly tipping could almost be eradicated if councils stopped charging for household pickups and that of commercial sized loads such as what builders/ tinkers need to get rid of..

There is some truth in what you say, our gardener would have to pay £40 per load if he had to use the council tip for his garden rubbish, and yet garden rubbish is one of the best money earners they have among their recycle lines. He leaves the rubbish for his customers to dispose of by taking to the tip or putting in their own brown bin, but I imagine many of his contemporaries are not quite as ethical.

I'm none too sure why I should pick up the tab for household pick ups and Bob the Builder's waste. That would be a local levy whereas I suspect the bill for fly tipped clearance is at the County level. Have you rung the Salop Council to offer paying an extra £1,000 a year towards the cost of these replacement services ? ;)

I don't why the costs to tip at the local recycling centre isn't just added onto the customers bill. If it's just the one full load it's still got to be cheaper than hiring a skip. But then thinking about it they probably do, but the unscrupulous trader/pikey will pocket the extra and fly tip it up some country lane anyway.

I would have thought the cost of clean ups would be far more than that of the revenue acquired through charging builders etc to dispose of their rubbish, especially when you consider the costs of taking someone to court for such offences.

I would say do away with fines if caught and slap them in jail for a few months. It probably would affect Mr Pikey though as he'd see it as a vacation.

I think the problem is that much fly tipping is on private land such as this farmer's and they rather than the local authority have to pay to clear it up. So the latter aren't really that bothered.

If you have work done by say a ' Check-a-Trade ' trader then you will be billed for any disposal that may be required but one has to pay more for that and some folk are simply looking only for the cheapest solution ... drum roll ... enter the cowboys.

Dorset has a high level of gypsy families and a low level of fly tipping ... just saying.
