Re: Football 2019/20
Of course I fancy the Shots Barney (fingers crossed)! They've re-signed several players from last season and are still looking to add a few more - a 20+ goal a season striker on a free would be nice.
The funding at our level is virtually nil and our sponsors wont be happy with adverts around a ground with no onlookers! Also no TV money - BT Sport show highlights but not every week and we usually only get 1 or 2 full games on TV for which we get payment. Best hope for all is a safe vaccine.
How are Gillingham doing- I see theyve been spending the cash on several forwards. Last season you had Jordan Roberts on loan from Ipswich who has now signed for a Scottish club. He was with us for 2/3 years from about age of 18. I'd forgotten you had Steve Evans as your manager - never a dull moment I suspect.

Re: Football 2019/20
Old Fatty Evans has certainly won over the Gills fans.
He is a breath of fresh air and 100% professional.
Nothing like we expected.
He has decided that due to the salary cap, he’s running on a small squad boosted by loanees from higher clubs.
We’ve taken two 20 year olds from Arsenal who both looked very good on Saturday.
I’m looking forward to a good season, but then us lower league fans are always optimistic

No surprise to us from the lower reaches Moby.Manoverboard wrote: 18 Aug 2020, 09:28Overpaid footballers ... Not really, read about life in the lower leagues
Big Bayo is a legend in every club he’s played for but he’s a journeyman footballer who regularly moves about.
Now that league one and two have introduced a squad salary cap, I expect that the championship will follow eventually. I don’t however expect the premier league to.
They are competing in a worldwide market.
How ours works is that the overall budget for the squad is a maximum £2.5 million.
You can pay an individual what you want but that means others may get less. The fixed budget is irrelevant to a clubs turnover, so will disadvantage big clubs trying to buy their way out of the division.
It’s supposed to stop clubs overspending and also level the playing field. It was voted in by a large majority of the league one clubs but the bigger boys didn’t like it.
It doesn’t impact players already on existing contracts. They will be counted as the division average.
So, it will really kick in next season 21/22
Gills policy seems to be a very small squad of about 18. Whether that can work over a short season remains to be seen but that’s the way he’s going.
No players on the books who won’t be playing regularly.
The average league one wage is £1700 a week so they are hardly on their uppers but obviously nowhere near the big bucks.
When Dack went to Blackburn, he went from 2k a week to 15k a week. That’s like winning the lottery for a young man.

" No surprise to us from the lower reaches Moby ".
It's no surprise to me either given that us Watford fans were once invited to make modest donations towards the cost of the players' football boots including two who later played for England. We have spent many more years in the lower reaches than we have in the Prem of course. One doesn't forget one's roots.
Our of interest Watford intend to run a lottery to determine who gets a seat when the fans are allowed to return in smaller numbers.

Regarding the proposed return for fans, it is interesting that Darlington, who went bust building a brand new 20,000 seater stadium and had to move out when they lost league status are now wanting to go back to the new stadium, so they will have space for all their season ticket holders and away fans.

It's simply a fun routine learnt the hard way and is generally used to avoid using ' you ' because some will take it personally and start jumping up and down suggesting that they are being accused of something or other. For whatever reason ' one ' seems to have a calming affect on such persons ... but one cannot discriminate so one uses it on a one to one basis while one is waiting to be amused.

Well, did you know that one’s team is playing this one’s team in a preseason friendly this afternoon?
No cameras but Gills are putting up a bit online tomorrow.

Re: Football 2019/20
I think it’s basically your under 23s with the odd first teamer.
We don’t have an under 23 team.
If they are good enough, they are in.
Both of our first choice centre backs are 20
Score is currently 1-1

Youth players I’ve never heard of.
Good run out for them against superior opponents

A good bit of fitness work.
Akinde looked like he needed it Saturday and McDonald looked like he’d spent too much time there.

No mention on ' one's ' site but there is a job opportunity for an ' Academy Player Care and Welfare Officer ' which indicates to me that clubs may be starting to take mental welfare a little more seriously than hitherto.barney wrote: 18 Aug 2020, 16:14Manoverboard wrote: 18 Aug 2020, 15:55Tomorrow's headline to read ' Young Hornets trounced by mighty Gills, Coach Hayden Mullins sacked '![]()

Re: Football 2019/20
I’ve watched Gills v Cambridge since Reading.
Our first competitive match is the 5th v Southend in some cup or other.
One o’clock kick off?
A bit weird but I suppose if there’s no fans they can’t sell any beer.
It’s great that the EFL are streaming every game live, home and away.
£10 a match is a real bargain compared to stadium prices.
You’ll be able to watch your beloved Hornets every week.
I’m lucky to have a LG OLED 55” so can get it on the big screen.
