£43,213 per year = £2,376,715 if he sees out the 55 years
Think you are a bit out there OL (unless you are a graduate from the Diane Abbott school of mathmatics ;) ). It is more like £10 million, and that is before inflation - so at least £25 million.
As you know onelife is a self-taught genius from the school of smart arses so I think you should get your calculator out again and try again.

Let's see ... excluding leap years .... 500 per day x 365 days in a year x 55 years in clinksville = 10,037,500 :o

THE cost to the taxpayer of holding inmates in our crisis-hit jails is at a record high, a Sun on Sunday study reveals today. The bill is now £43,213 a year, or £118 a day, for every place at our 117 prisons — up nearly six per cent in the past 12 months

It might well be £500 hundred a day on "suicide watch" but you, me and Screwy know this isn’t going to happen for any extended period of time…that being said I rather suspect each prison governor will seize any opportunity they can to boost their own prison revenues?
