Carding Mill Valley

Unread post by Onelife »

Hi all...my daughter has asked me to post this link in the hope that some of you might be willing to sign the petition.

Carding Mill Valley sits in the heart of the Shropshire Hills and it is a place that as a child, and now as an adult l have visited many times. Our daughter has been volunteering there for the past year taking school children around on ecological educational visits for the educational department. Many of the children come from inner city areas who rarely get to visit such beautiful places let alone learn about the ecosystems and geology of the area.

The education department is now under threat of closes due to the economically presures brought about by Covid. It would be such a shame to see this facility lost to the thousands of children who bennifit from this outdoor experience each year. If any of you think you would like to support this cause then the link provides further information.

Carding Mill Valley is ' National Trust ' of course and I would expect them to devise alternative cheaper schemes and/or a reduction of expenditure wherever possible during this difficult time. This they say, in your link, is their intention so why should I, as a Member of the NT, put even greater pressure on their resources than they already have.

The scheme certainly has merit but perhaps it needs to be trimmed as per everything else until the Covid passes us by ?
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

Hi Mob…you can’t get much cheaper than one full time educational officer who is very much hands on. From what my daughter has told me the officer is a qualified ecologist who organises everything including scheduling how the volunteers work down to overseeing the many surveys they undertake in those yonder hills. My daughter feels that to maintain this excellent program of education to children & adults there will be a need for a dedicated person, with the skills and knowledge to pull all these things together. Once it gone it most likely won’t get replaced and for future generations of children this would be a great loss iho

Then it is a question, presumably, of who pays for him / her.

IMHO it should be funded by the generous enlightened folk of the region who derive the most benefit, in this instance urban West Midlands rather than somebody from, say, Dorset who will likely be called upon to donate to something similar in the Purbeck Hills region.

Good luck though
