I wonder if Elvis Costello's "Tramp the Dirt Down" will now become a hit?

Pretty sick stuff, on an otherwise decent album.

Can't agree with you there Graham. I was simply pointing out some of the nasty stuff that's already out there. I believe that I stated that I consider it "sick"

Judging by some of the "celebrations" going on in various quarters I thought my post was pertinent. Sorry if you found it either insensitive or nauseating.

Everyone has a right to their opinion. Words and songs, anecdotes and bitter recollections - all either praising or demonising Margaret Thatcher. What they have in common is the right of anyone to air their view and it is interesting to note that those who are currently demonising her are not criticising those who praise her, just the woman herself.

Rip maggie,

my first thoughts yesterday when the news said she will be having a state funeral was " it will be a disaster as all the protesters will be out in force" i sincerely hope i'm wrong and the day will pass with dignity for the sake of her family.

Again this is a free country and whether her supporters like it or not, anyone wishing to peacefully protest at her funeral has the right to do so.

Common decency means that any funeral should be allowed to carry on without risk of protest or other trouble. Regardless of the "free country" argument, no one in their right mind should consider staging any kind of political protest at a funeral

Agree gilly88

I hadn’t even considered the prospect of protesters disrupting what should be a dignified occasion.

I sincerely hope this doesn’t prove to be the case and hope all steps will be taken to ensure this doesn’t happen.

Regards

OL

I suppose it's a Mrs Dountoothersasyouwouldbedoneby - now I may have got the actual name of the character from The Water Babies a bit wrong ..... but if people are going to protest perhaps they should consider how they would like it if people spoiled a family funeral which meant alot to them.

There may well be grandchildren at this funeral - and at their age they may well feel it if protesters misbehave.

There is a time and a place - and the funeral is most definitely not it. Protesting - or making a nuisance - what's the point of it? Nobody can turn back time.

I dare say there will be a few brain dead souls who will cause offence just because they can, or have been put up to it, but the vast majority will surely have the decency to let her moment in time pass in peace.

It is clear that some cannot comprehend the consequences that her policies had on many or the bitterness and despair those policies created in peoples hearts and minds. To all intents and purposes she cared nothing for the working class, and created an I'm all right jack greedy society. There still appears to be an us and them scenario where one side seeks to subjugate the other. I hope people will respect the funeral but we live in a free society to say what we please .......

I was a member of the working class and I loved her, she helped put the Great back into Britain, which it was far from being before she came into office. I remember the rubbish piling up in the streets, and not being able to bury your dead, it was weeks before we could bury my father.

I also was an advocate of the poll tax, it just needed a bit of tweaking. She did bring prosperity. GDP grew 23.3% on her watch.

She believed that personal responsibility was the key-note of the future. As she said at her party adoption address, it was one of the chief charges we lay at the door of the present Government that personal responsibility is far less now than before, and something must be done about it.
This ‘passing the buck’ attitude of to-day is not the sort of thing which will get us out of the mess we are in, and we, as women, realize it."

What ever your politics, she was a formidable woman, and a true world states person , hence the funeral, which the Queen and Prince Phillip will attend.

I had the pleasure of meeting her when she came to the Hotel I worked in, as a guest speaker, at a dinner organised by the local Tory party, this was after she will surely have the decency to let her moment in time pass in peace.

I also trust that people will have the common decency, to let her funeral pass without incident.

Me too Delboy and the gas, water and electricity being turned off at the slightest excuse plus the umpteen wildcat strikes in our key industries.

She was like a breath of fresh air and way overdue

Free speech and the right to protest are fine
but we all know the usual braindead knobheads ,who were not even born when she was in power will use this as an excuse to run riot and cause mayhem
MT had been out of politics for years and yet some people still can't let go.
and before anyone starts, my father and grand father were miners, my other grandfather worked in a mill, so yes I do know what it meant, before some sanctimonious idiot tries to patronise me

No, sorry, Mo2013, they don't. The lady is dead - what exactly would they think they are "protesting" about? Whatever impact she had on Britain and its people has now passed into history. We have had different Governments since she was deposed who have done nothing to improve anything she is thought to have done wrong.

There is nothing to protest about, they can change nothing that happened during Mrs Thatcher's term in office, even if it needed changing. Just stay at home and swear at the television, if you must.

I agree with you completely and who will be paying for this funeral?
Perhaps the money would be better spent helping the needy in this country.
Or perhaps Maggies millionaire friends will pay for it.

Perhaps you could set an example, by forfeiting your next cruise, and spend the money on the needy in this country. Surely as you say it would be better spent.

Interesting that no matter how much people moan and attack her policies, none of her policies (other than the Poll Tax, which personally I was an advocate of) have ever been revoked, by any government which followed hers.

I pay money towards various charities thank you, not that it is any of your business.

The difference is that is MY MONEY that I have earned, the state are not paying for me.

What a pompous comment!!!

Perfectly sums up Thatchers society selfish and uncaring.

It is a fact that we live in a free society and can do - and say - what we please, witness some of the things posted on here for a start, 'braindead' and 'sanctimonious sod' ????????????? Mmmmm very classy.

There are those who were - and are - 'all right Jack' and so have no compassion for those who lost their jobs, and their homes (mining villages were built especially to house the miners and their families) because of particular policies and the enduring bitterness it created. Those who had businesses etc. were OK thanks, and clearly didn't give a damn about the masses. Decimate our manufacturing industry, steel, coal, and then get the stuff from abroad, dirt cheap, probably produced by people on a pittance wage, but then be outraged when the 'peasants' here asked for more. I'm not saying it was right to have the unions holding the country to ransom, but I understood that they were trying to safeguard their members' interests. I have always believed that a worker should be paid a decent wage. So if - and we don't know if there will be an outpouring of bitterness - some decide they want to use an opportunity to vent their bitterness, they have every right to do so.

Nothing of the sort, I also support charities, as did Mrs Thatcher (Dimentia Society), if I was being selfish, then I would not be happy to support this funeral.
As for uncaring, I think you would be better addressing this, to those who speak I'll of the dead.

When have I spoken ill of the dead?
Perhaps your comments should be spoken to people you know and not tell a complete stranger what to do.

What gives you the right to tell me what to say because my opinion differs to yours.

Obviously a closed mind!!,
