Saw a woman at Asda this morning loading 48 rolls of loo paper into her car. Perhaps she is storing them for the winter.

I listened to Borisās āIām still in chargeā speech this morning and gave it 7 /10. I havenāt as yet made my mind up whether it is vision with a fair helping of optimism or whether he is desperately trying to regain his Mojo?ā¦. Windmills on the sea, fixed interest rates / 5% deposits on mortgages etcā¦sound positive, however, time will tell whether he can soar with eagles before getting gobbled up by the turkeys on his back bench.
Anyone know what he was referring to when he said āthe law of averageā in reference to care homes?

Re: Life After Brexit
I would give no more than 4 out of 10 - little more than a rallying call to those that need a comfort blanket to sleep at night. The man has to stop bleating on about the war, that was 80 years ago, we are now in a different century, we are now in a different world and Johnson is no Churchill.Onelife wrote: 06 Oct 2020, 15:05I listened to Borisās āIām still in chargeā speech this morning and gave it 7 /10. All he did was reiterate plans that are, mostly, already in the pipeline:
- move towards renewables (that is an international requirement) - at least this will probably create some non-revenue generating jobs. His promise of £160million is just recirculation of previously promised money that barely scrapes the surface of the billions needed
- we already have the ability to get fixed interest rates (some very long term). Johnson is just looking to extend this but has to find someway that would not actually be counter productive (due to anticipated rise in inflation). An alternative also under discussion is stepped rates.
- the minimum mortgage deposit is a governmental requirement (brought in after the collapse of 2007). Prior to that banks allowed customers to have 0% deposit and high multiples of earnings. So the only people keeping it high is the government. The question is how does Johnson stop another borrowing balloon (especially at a time when personal, commercial and governmental borrowing is already pushing towards new records).
- one-to-one teaching has always been available (but requires parental responsibility)
- boosting of housebuilding - been hearing that one for many years so nothing new there
It is what was missing that is of most interest ... nothing much about revenue generating job creation, the economy, welfare or his tax plans to pay for the huge borrowing the government has created.
I don't see Johnson lasting too much longer. He was only there to serve a single purpose and has otherwise shown himself to be incompetent. I agree with him though when he called the thought that he had 'lost his mojo' as 'drivel' - you cannot lose what you never had.

Can we keep this internal political drivel off the Brexit thread guys.
Maybe we need a Current Affairs thread for this.

Re: Current Affairs
Changing the subject, among my daily webpage loads is the BBC markets currency page, and it amazes me how volatile this is over a day, however the change over a week is generally miniscule. Now I know the experts will tell me that this is reaction to daily news and market sentiment, but why the significant changes within a day. The answer would seem to be that these allow traders with sophisticated algorithms to make oodles of money, most of which has to be paid for by Joe Public somehow or another.
Therefore I propose that currency exchange rates should only be amended every 24 hours, this might not stop the attempts at profiteering, but since they will only occur once a day it will be easy to identify and a tax rate of 99.5% might be a nice little earner for Rishi, and his other chancellor cronies, please discuss.

I have generally wondered the same, but have just assumed that real-time movements are of no relevance to me. I monitor about 6 currencies, purely because I hold them in my portfolio, but I look at them once a month or so.towny44 wrote: 07 Oct 2020, 09:46Changing the subject, among my daily webpage loads is the BBC markets currency page, and it amazes me how volatile this is over a day, however the change over a week is generally miniscule. I guess as stock market trader or hedge fund manager they would want the information in real time since it provides an early predictive/indicator of how an announcement or event is being taken????? But to you and me it generally only becomes relevant when we want to buy a few spondoolies for holiday.

There were a number of posts that were Off Topic in ' Brexit ' so I moved them into this Topic but my explanation ( along with other posts ) has been deleted by ' a n other '. When they are merged the titles remain as is so that the poster can recognise them within the new Topic.
Sorry to confuse
