Re: Current Affairs
If we are going to have a lockdown the sooner the better as far as I’m concerned, however If I were one of Boris’s advisors, I would leave the Christmas lockdown option open in an attempt to get the hordes of Christmas shoppers shopping earlier in order that we avoid the Christmas infection shopping rush.Kendhni wrote: 14 Oct 2020, 17:23I thought this article was interesting

I am not convinced that is a good idea (especially in the first 3 weeks of December) - the online retailers would love it but a forced lockdown in the lead up to Christmas could totally decimate the High Street, many of whom are depending on the Christmas shoppers to make revenue. I still feel doing it now in the hope of having more freedom in the lead up to Christmas would be better (and then maybe another reset in the new year).
In other news it looks like we are going back into lockdown (albeit not quite as strict as before). There is no doubt that is going to be the death-knell for some businesses - very sad!

The heart sinksGill W wrote: 14 Oct 2020, 16:59I've just seen this from someone who is normally reliable, so I will assume that the adding up is correct.
The UK reported 117396 new coronavirus cases for the whole of September.
So far in October the new infection figure is 201385. Even if infections continue at the same rate, we'd be over 400000 by the end of the month. But growth is accelerating, so the potential figure for the end of the month is alarming.
If this doesn't concentrate the minds of the powers that be, nothing will

Re: Current Affairs
Just read this story https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54538939
The message should be simple: no mask, no entry, no exceptions.
One of our supermarkets used to have a young lad telling people to put masks on and was getting abuse. Now there are two burly bouncers on the door, it appears that this has resolved the issues of the delicate little princesses that issues with masks. Julie was saying that for the first time every single shopper was wearing a mask.

Hats off to the supermarket. Pleased to hear that in our neck of the woods a special court has been convened to deal with those who flout the rules. Hopefully some nice big fines will be dished out which will serve as a warning to everybody else. It's time we stopped pussyfooting around with these clowns because the effect of their stupidity has too great an effect on society.
I was taught to be cautious

As someone who is married to a welshman I must admit I feel a little uncomfortable about these new rules. Not sure how these it will be implemented. However I have been told that there are barriers across some roads already in areas where they are in lockdown.
But on the other hand seeing picture of the crowds enjoying themselves in Liverpool and a gym and bar owner saying they are not going to shut then they should not be allowed out of Liverpool no matter where they want to go.
As I understand it they often visit north Wales and its soon going to be half term.
We have been in a county lockdown for a few weeks now.

I would guess that the Welsh will force their Hotel owners to reject block bookings from Merseyside, the Midlands and Bristol. Job done for the most part or so I would have thought.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

Our good friends have three holiday cottages in the grounds of their house in rural North Devon.
Last week I actually asked her what she would do about bookings from high risk areas, specifically would she cancel them.
She replied ....... ummmmmm !
They are obviously massively down year on year financially.
Easy easy to say what you would do if you don’t have to do it.

There was the Welsh health guy on the news last night saying what was going to happen in Wales and the reasoning behind the decisions - all of which sounded plausible until he was asked what was going to happen with the likes of hotels to which his response was basically not his problem that is for central Government to deal with.

Our granddaughters partner is a taxi driver, he’s making very little, sometimes not even enough to pay for the car and radio. He said that not all his passengers wear masks but he isn’t going to turn down fares. He wears his and sanitises after each fare.

Re: Current Affairs
Last week I developed a bad cough and taste buds went askew, I thought it wise to get tested. Tuesday morning I went on the NHS Covid test site, put in my postcode and it gave me 2 options that were close to me, one was a drive through 20 miles away with 200+ slots, the other was 2.5 miles in the town hall, walk through.i plumped for the town hall.81 slots. I booked the test at 10-30 and chose a 2 pm slot, earlier ones were available. I arrived 15 mins early but was seen to,it was a self test. I got the result at 00-27 this morning...Negative. I can only praise the system whereby others cannot.

On 12/10 they reported 43K (but that takes in the weekend I believe).
If the government doesn't start listening to its own advisors and do something, and do it fast, I am sure we will match that in 2-3 weeks time. As of Monday this week we were still tracking Spain and France.

Are you happy to accept that as the whole story or do you think there may have been other factors and individuals at play?

He was head of the CPS and therefore should take ultimate responsibility for all its actions.
Surely the fact that the CPS declined to prosecute is part of the story

The latest ONS stats for covid daily casrs of 27000 per day equates to 10 million a year, plus all those who already had it, and we will be well on the way to hard immunity by this time next year.
