The facts cannot be debunked.

Remain side have been very good at telling everyone what they think will happen.
Remember Osborne saying that house prices would crash if Leave won?
This week’s news is an all time high.
I don’t personally think that’s a good thing but highlights how wrong remain were about pretty much everything.
Millions would lose their jobs.
Remember that.
Employment was the highest in history until Covid struck.
Most EU citizens would leave?
Well, so far 3.8 million of the alleged 3 million who were here have applied to remain here.
All the financial sector would relocate to Europe?
Nope.
A few subsidiaries but no exodus as forecast.

I wonder if the BBC, Sky or any of the Remainer rags will be publishing those findings. Considering the indignation they expressed at the time I wonder if they will admit they were wrong. Somehow I doubt it.

So, today is deadline day !

Only it's not is it ?

Johnson said that if there was no movement by October 15th , then he'd have to presume that the EU could not find a way to formalise an agreement and call a halt to proceedings.

It looks like his bluff has been called so far.

So, the three sticking points

Governance - the UK had agreed to all current legislation but cannot be included in any future legislation. Not good enough says the EU and they want to keep the UK in the web in the future.

Level playing field - the UK has agreed to an independent arbitration service to govern this. Not good enough. The EU insist on the ECJ having the final say.

Fishing - the UK have offered a three year transition to give EU countries time to make arrangements. Not good enough. The EU demand that the current arrangements remain forever.

I'm pretty sure that even the most Europhile of our regular posters would concede that the EU side are hardly being reasonable in these so called negotiations.

A cynic could think that the EU side really don't want a trade agreement with the UK.

They have bizarrely quoted as saying that a country cannot leave and continue to expect the ‘benefits’ but appear to want exactly that from us.
Continuation in laws, standards, fishing, security, data, financial services ?

It's all hot air and intended for the consumption of the EU Member Countries to demonstrae how tough their negotiators are, come the eleventh hour :shh:

If Boris really is true to his word then he should be addressing the nation tonight telling us that the deal the EU wanted us to accept is unxceptable and because of this we will be signing a no deal Brexit as soon as possible....l won't go as far as to say we haven't got anything to lose as far as trade is concerned but in the game of bluff this move could just play to our advantage.

I suspect the EU would know he was bluffing, so it's probably better that he says nothing, rather than try digging a deeper hole.
On this trade deal I think I am in complete agreement with Moby, it will go right down to the wire so we just have to be patient. Although I can think of at least 3 journalists who will be keen to ask Boris why he has let his ultimatum day pass.

I wasn’t being wholly serious about broadcasting to the nation John but I do think Boris has to either put up or shut up. Not going through with his deadlines will be seen as a weakness, not only by the EU but also by those who tasked him to deliver. I think we would be wise to take a step back from negotiations and let them stew for a while then wait for them to come knocking on our door.

I read today on politico that the EU have invited the U.K. to continue negotiating.
How very civil of them.
The day has now passed when an agreement could be reached and ratified not only by the U.K. parliament but the Eu parliament and the parliaments of the 27 remaining members.

Whatever happens now will be a temporary sticking plaster.

It sounds like Boris has found his Mojo again :)

Mr Johnson said it was clear after this week’s two-day summit that the EU was not ready to reach agreement on terms acceptable to the UK.

“From the outset, we were totally clear that we wanted nothing more complicated than a Canada style relationship based on friendship and free trade,” said the PM.

"To judge by the latest EU summit in Brussels, that won't work for our EU partners. They want the continued ability to control our legislative freedom, our fisheries, in a way that is completely unacceptable to an independent country.

"And since we have only 10 weeks until the end of the transition period on 1 January, I have to make a judgement about the likely outcome and to get us all ready.

"Given that they have refused to negotiate seriously for much of the last few months and given that this summit appears explicitly to rule out a Canada-style deal, I’ve concluded that we should get ready for 1 January with arrangements that are more like Australia's based on simple principles of global free trade.

"And we can do it, because we always knew that there would be changed on 1 January, whatever type of relationship we had.

“And so now is the time for our businesses to get ready and for our hauliers to get ready, for travellers to get ready. And of course we're willing to discuss the practicalities with our friends, where a lot of progress has already been made on such issues as social security, aviation, nuclear co-operation, and so on.”

Mr Johnson said that the UK could approach the end of the transition period “with high hearts and with complete confidence

One european leader said today that the U.K. needs to explain what it wants and they need more clarity.

Seriously ?

As Bocelli sang ..... time to say goodbye

Like most, I was expecting to leave on a deal.
Like most, I expected the EU to be serious.

They’ve basically done exactly what they did during the Greece crisis, while failing to understand that the U.K. is not the supplicant party.

Edit < sorry wrong thread 😘

I believe we now have tariff free trade deals with S Korea as well as Japan, so I rather suspect that BMW and Mercedes might have a lot more competition from Lexus and Infiniti, and VW from Kia and Hyundai if there is no trade deal. I wonder what the German VDA will be thinking today?
