Re: Current Affairs
I’m just wondering what people are expecting from a vaccine.
As yet, we don’t really know anything. We don’t know if a vaccine will be approved, how effective it would be and how often we would need to be vaccinated.
I hope there will be a vaccine, and that it will be a way to reduce infections to allow us to have some freedoms, in the medium term. Long term, I hope it will enable us to move to a more normal way of living, albeit a new normal.
However, short term, I’m not expecting much change to day to day life.
I think masks and social distancing will be required for some time to come, vaccine or no vaccine. Certainly for all of 2021, at least.

I am hoping that it will give immunity for a period of time. However this seems to be a virus prone to mutation so not sure how effective todays vaccination will be tomorrow (especially since people are now being reported as catching it more than once).Gill W wrote: 22 Oct 2020, 13:15I’m just wondering what people are expecting from a vaccine.

I remain hopeful that an effective virus will be found in the near future and be rolled out over Q1/Q2 next year. I also remain hopeful that we will return to a more normal state by Q3 of next year (although wonder if winter could bring more misery).

Re: Current Affairs
I don't expect a vaccine to eliminate covid completely, but mainly because there seem to be a lot more anti vaxxers around nowadays. However I do hope that at least one of them will give adequate protection over up to 12 months, then that might even convince the anti vaxxers that is worthwhile.

Fantastic news and great to see a home grown solution. Hopefully it won't be too long before it is rolled out to the general public.Onelife wrote: 23 Oct 2020, 10:47Happy Christmas for some and hopefully a happy new year for all of us.

Re: Current Affairs
When our doctors surgery advises us that a vaccine is available we will accept it, and follow the official advice. Until then, anything else is pure speculation. I view anything printed in the Daily Wail with a large pinch of salt.
There are plenty of internet experts spouting under weird and wonderful aliases, and some of them are being quite offensive about Professor Van Tam, and Chris Witty. Personally our view is that given the political pressures, and media hype being put upon them, they have remained remarkably restrained and professional.

Portugal passes face mask requirement in busy outdoor spaces
Portugal has made face masks mandatory in crowded outdoor areas nationwide as the government tries to bring down the rising tide of infections.
The new measure means residents aged 10 or above have to wear a face covering whenever social distancing cannot be guaranteed. It is valid for at least 70 days.
......
We of course will get round to doing it later

Re: Current Affairs
I trust you noted that this is only mandatory in busy outdoor spaces, which at present in the UK would seem unlikely apply to any area that I frequent.Onelife wrote: 23 Oct 2020, 16:10Portugal passes face mask requirement in busy outdoor spaces

Re: Current Affairs
I think that you will find that that has been a requirement in England for some time already - that is not to say that many adhere to it.

But if you should choose to venture out beyond your garden get you will no doubt do the common sence thing and wear a mask…we never know who you might bump into.towny44 wrote: 23 Oct 2020, 16:44I trust you noted that this is only mandatory in busy outdoor spaces, which at present in the UK would seem unlikely apply to any area that I frequent.Onelife wrote: 23 Oct 2020, 16:10Portugal passes face mask requirement in busy outdoor spaces

As far as I am aware, the wearing of face masks is not mandatory in outdoor spaces in England
