Re: Life After Brexit
From the BBC
"Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer accused the government of "dithering over Brexit", calling for the PM to "get this deal done" and "deliver it for the British people"."
So his policy is to roll over and take whatever crumbs are on the table. Does he not realise that negotiati0on is s two way street

I think using taxes on tariffs to subsidise anyone is not allowed under WTO rules, but someone will be along to tell me if I am wrong.oldbluefox wrote: 18 Dec 2020, 14:32I presume all the tariffs we raise on goods coming into the country will go into the Treasury's pockets and since we import more than we export there should be a net gain to us. Is that right?
Perhaps that can then be used to subsidise farmers, spend on the NHS or whichever way we want to spend it. At the moment the bulk of tariffs from non EU countries goes into the EU coffers so we should be better off in that respect if my thinking is correct.

Re: Life After Brexit
Correct me if I am wrong but I thought that the UK is still part of the EU until the end of the year.
I also thought that one of the main tenets of the EU was "open borders"
So why have the French closed their border with the UK?
Talk about having their fish cake and eating it!!

Lots of Eu countries closed their borders in this pandemic David.
It’s the logical thing to do.
We as an island could have done a lot more but Johnson and his Cabinet decided not to.
We still had over a million people coming in and going out of our airports while you and I were in the first lockdown.
Can’t explain that.

Loads of lorry drivers stuck in Kent. No facilities, no where to go they just have to wait it out. All these countries have shut their borders and absolutely no thought for the drivers bringing goods to them or collecting.

Never mind all that, my burning question is ... will I be getting any Iceberg lettuce on tomorrow's delivery from Sainsbugs for our Christmas prawn cocktails ?

Having lived near Maidstone for much of my adult life, I can tell you that the vast majority, and I’m talking probably about 80% of the trucks sitting in the queue are European trucks, returning.Bensham33 wrote: 21 Dec 2020, 12:31Loads of lorry drivers stuck in Kent. This government has had a full year to get the lorry parks ready with adequate facilities for these poor guys.
Another obvious failure of this current government.

Having been caught up in it a lot of that total were Brits trying to get home. Don't know the breakdown but I remember seeing the figures in the past.barney wrote: 21 Dec 2020, 11:55Lots of Eu countries closed their borders in this pandemic David.

I assume you refer to Mrs and Miss OL rather than those smelly, scrawny egg laying cluckers in the orchardOnelife wrote: 21 Dec 2020, 14:54We had our Tesco delivery yesterday and Sainsburys today, thus we have so much lettuces that we are feeding it to the girls…just saying!Manoverboard wrote: 21 Dec 2020, 12:39Never mind all that, my burning question is ... will I be getting any Iceberg lettuce on tomorrow's delivery from Sainsbugs for our Christmas prawn cocktails ?![]()

Well that was a shock to the system. I forgot today's Sainsbubs delivery was at 8am. Usually get it between 1 and 2pm. And it was all there except my Tassimo hot chocolate pods. So how does one pass a day when one is up so ridiculously early?

My Sainsbury's delivery is due between 12 and 1, rather than the normal 1 till 2, which will delay lunch, but who cares. Oh and we are missing the Taste the Difference mince pies, the replacement is the standard ones which seem to have cement rather than flour in the pastry, so they will be rejected.

A few weeks ago we were woken up by Saisbugs delivery at 6:30 I wasn't up
I wasn't happy either - the delivery was for our next door neighbour at 1A we are number one.

We weren't! But Trish woke up to hear the noise of the van reversing up to our house! We had planned to be up by 9.00 as we have a delivery coming from one of our local restaurants / small hotel who have converted to takeaways. They deliver restaurant quality meals frozen so we've ordered something that isn't turkey for Sunday! They have been amazing. They've even got a beautifully sign-written van for their new service. Have to admire their initiative.Chalgrave4 wrote: 22 Dec 2020, 10:42Lucky you were upMervyn and Trish wrote: 22 Dec 2020, 09:18Well that was a shock to the system. We are part of the resistance that still goes to the shop and buy exactly what we want.
I wonder if it will ever catch on

If it hadn't been for the pandemic we would be too. Once it's over we'll go back to shopping ourselves for things we like to choose. But having tried it we won't return to lugging home things like heavy bags of cat litter and washing powder. Quite happy to click those on line. So we'll have a smaller delivery for that sort of thing and shop lighter ourselves for things Trish likes to eyeball, like fresh fruit and veg.barney wrote: 22 Dec 2020, 11:50We’re hard core radicals.Chalgrave4 wrote: 22 Dec 2020, 10:42Lucky you were upMervyn and Trish wrote: 22 Dec 2020, 09:18Well that was a shock to the system. Re: Life After Brexit
We are in the same club barney. Mrs S was at our local Morrisons this morning using her privileged 6am one hour NHS shopping slot to avoid the hoards. I would have gone with her but I'm still too poorly
I will say this for Morrisons, credit where credits due, they give all NHS staff 10% of their shopping (subject to proof) which we have been milking benefitting from for months now.
