Rats
I have to say my wife’s Chicken husbandry is second to none, but we’ve still had three rats around the coup. Thanks to my hunting skills we now only have one. I know we only have one (presently) because we have a nature spy camera trained on the area, and yes, he/she was there last night. I swear to gawd it stuck two fingers up to me last night having avoided the two traps I had set again. By hook or by crook I will get it but I’m starting to develop an unhealthy respect for this rat due to its escapology skills…enjoy your Boxing day dinner.

Get a cat. It’ll soon make short work of your rodent problem

You can’t have it always. You hire a killer don’t expect it to discriminate. They are like a snipers telescopic sight. If it moves it’s dead.

Re: Rats
My neighbour's cat Roger is a regular visitor and last summer the little devil often brought me "presents" - I told him off but he must love me he kept on leaving a headless bird or some entrails
Unfortunately its what birds do
He s a very affectionate cat and I am a soft touch - he has his own bowls now for the food I buy him - his nickname is Roger the Lodger

My BIL kept poultry for years., there really is no way to avoid rats seeking a free meal. So the best way to get rid of them is poison, he did trap one or two but poison usually killed dozens. By the way that single remaining rat will generally an army of mates watching to see if he can successfully get a free meal.

Re: Rats
It is something I've considered but we have quite a few kites and buzzards round here which are carrion feeders and why I'm reluctant to go down that line if l can keep on top of them. Rats are everywhere with or without chickens so it's just a case of splat the rat when you get the chance to do so.towny44 wrote: 26 Dec 2020, 18:04My BIL kept poultry for years., there really is no way to avoid rats seeking a free meal. I saw a farm program some time ago where the farmer had a few terrier dogs. He said to the presenter “watch this”. He got his tractor and lifted a huge pallet load of bales off the ground in his barn where immediately what looked like a river of rats came running out in all directions. The terriers made mince meat of them in what seemed like seconds. The speed they moved, grabbed a rat, shook and broke its neck was incredible.

Re: Rats
The elusive rat is still on the loose…I put two traps out last night with cocktail sausages as a special treat…the rat made an appearance but avoided the area…it’s a very clever rat so I’ve named it Stephen.
I’m going to leave the traps unset for a few days then try again.

Re: Rats
Try a night vigil with an air gun. You might have to provide Mrs Onelife with the odd hot drink though.

Re: Rats
I don't think so. What self respecting cat is going to a*se around with a dirty rat when it has salmon in a rich sauce or tender chicken in gravy amongst other delicious offerings in the fridge back home.
Don't worry, be happy
