So the EU are throwing their toys out of their pram - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-55805903

I have said this before, and I will say it again, there is no place for politics where Covid-19 vaccine is concerned.
I was appalled to read that.
Why? It appears that the UK may have got vaccines from the EU stock by mistake.
Demand is outstripping the ability to supply so a bit of give and take is to be expected = with each country obviously wanting to protect its own citizens.

The Eu were at the back of the queue because they didn’t order until late August and the EMA are even later in giving approval.
The real reason it that the EMA is massively understaffed because most of the employees wouldn’t move back to Europe, preferring to stay in London.
Another inconvenient truth about the Eu.
They still haven’t secured the ventilators that the U.K. was vilified for not joining in on.
They are like a sloth in a fast moving world.

There was a discussion at lunchtime on Radio 4 as to how much the EU had paid for the vaccine. It seems the USA had paid quite highly for their stocks.

Ken, I understand that the EU has not yet approved the AZ vaccine so it's not surprising that AZ reallocated current supplies to the UK that might have originally been intended for the EU but would be more useful in the UK.

I believe the EU has approved a couple of vaccines. If the AZ one is not approved then it makes sense for others to use it - however they have to expect that the supply chain will slow when it does get approved. It is understandable why the EU (and any country) wants to ensure that its citizens have priority access to the vaccines they are manufacturing. Similarly Johnson has hinted that he will be protectionist about vaccines manufactured in the UK (would anyone expect anything else?). I am seeing very little that is newsworthy in this (apart from generating sensationalist headlines).

The UK so far has ordered some 340million doses of vaccines (which is well over double what it should need).
Hopefully the COVID vaccine will be included in next years flu jab.

Also, there is not one factual shred of evidence in that report. It’s all, someone thinks etc....

Not with the current vaccines - there has to be a gap between having a flu jab and a Covid jab.

As far as I am aware the EU has only approved Pfizer, and are still evaluating AZ

Yes, but these are only the initial vaccines. A second phase of vaccines are in the pipeline - I am not sure if they will require 1 or 2 jabs, but there is no reason why a single jab could not be given as part of the flu jab with a booster a few weeks later.

You’d hope so, wouldn’t you.
Then it’s reported in a German paper that the AZ vaccine is only 8% effective.

Hi Barney, it certainly is a postcode lottery. In South Shropshire we've only had enough vaccine to immunise in care homes. The first of our over 80/s start being immunised on Thursday, providing the vaccines arrive this time!!

As is often the case, it was just a sensationalist headline by a journalist who did not understand what they were being told
https://fullfact.org/health/german-astr ... delsblatt/

However what you must remember is that the first jab is just a primer for the immune system, and only has a limited effect against the virus, it is the second jab that produces the full immune response and drives up the efficacy.

I should have said that supply to the NW is being reduced, we have been quite successful with the roll out, maybe Shropshire need to learn lessons.

If it's any consolation OL I am in my 70s and shielded and there is no sign of a vaccination date whereas just 7 miles away my younger in-laws with no medical issues had theirs a week ago. I trust mine is arriving by pony and trap but hopefully ours will be fresh stock!!

That's not what Whitty and Vallance are saying, they feel that the first jab provides a high level of protection and the second extends the length of the protection.

There was a guy on LBC this morning from the Jvc or whatever it’s called, saying the first dose gives a high level of protection and there is no problem with waiting 12 weeks for the second.
