New telly
Got a new telly and astonished by the advance in technology in 8 years. Our old Samsung 40" Smart TV still worked fine but over time the different apps have been updated and some are no longer supported. We lost a few we didn't mind but when we lost All 4 and My 5 started to think about a replacement.
Then our daughter's old telly died and she doesn't need the Smart stuff as she has a SkyQ box to do all she wants. So we get a new one, still Samsung but now 43" and all the latest apps supported. She gets a free secondhand telly.
I set it up this morning. First surprise, the instructions basically say turn it on and the telly takes you through the rest. Most if it done not on the telly but on my mobile phone, though you can use the remote if you don't have a smartphone.
I was a bit bothered it doesn't have a Scart socket which I'd need for my old Sky Freesat box, but I knew I could get a Scart to HDMI converter for a few quid. Turns out not to need it. It said nothing in the spec or on the box but it has a satellite tuner built in, alongside the DTV one. Connect dish and aerial and it tunes the lot into a single guide.
It has built in wifi, the old one needed a dongle.
It also has built in voice activation with a choice of Alexa, Google or something else. So if you have other Smart gizmos it can control those too.
You can drive it from it's own remote or the phone.
It cost less than the last one.
If I keep it as long as the last one I'll still never know how to work it all.

Re: New telly
You need a 12 year old to explain it all to you. The kids who write the software are not much older.

Re: New telly
Merv, kid and sweet shop come to mind
All singing all dancing TV’s are all very good, and yes, we have one, but at the end of the day all I want is simplicity, a good picture and sound and that’s about it. Remotely of course.
Half the stuff nowadays that they build in you won’t use, and as for sound, they’ve got you over a barrel because unless you already have a sound setup with your previous tv your going to have to get one as the tv sound on the modern units is basically cr*p.

Yes the ad for the soundbar was in the box! But no we haven't got one . The sound of the new one is not bad for general viewing. As good as the old one.Stephen wrote: 13 Apr 2021, 21:41Merv, kid and sweet shop come to mind![]()

You're right about the features. A bit like our dishwasher. Has five basic programmes with various options. We use two. And the washing machine must have 200 plus combinations of programme, temperature and spin speed and we use three or four.

Re: New telly
We had to pay many extra pounds to get the Freesat option yet it seems that most TVs now have that feature as standard ... yes / no.

I know that it is not necessarily a cheap option but getting a full 5;1 sound system for the TV makes a massive difference with many programmes and especially with films. A really strange experience when you hear somebody talking behind you!

We have a Samsung and the sound can be changed using its remote to cater for films, sport, general viewing etc. It makes a big difference to the latter regarding both tone and volume and especially so when one's hearing starts to go on the blink.

Re: New telly
My tv is an LG Oled.
It’s all singing all dancing but to be honest, I don’t use much of the features.
It has a mouse that operates from the remote which is handy.
The best thing is that I can ping the Gills matches from my iPhone to the big screen. Don’t ask me how it works because my lad set it up, but it’s great.

That will be WiFi not Bluetooth. Bluetooth has a limited data rate. Usually the phone/tablet just initiates the connection and the TV’s internal app takes over from there.towny44 wrote: 14 Apr 2021, 10:05It's called Blue Tooth casting Barney, Sky Q lets me do that with You Tube.barney wrote: 14 Apr 2021, 09:42My tv is an LG Oled.

It must be a woman thing. Mrs S talks In front, next to, walking away and in another room to you as well when I'm trying to watch something.
