New phone

I am looking to buy a new pay as you go mobile.
My old one has android 6 which soon will not be supported by HSBC banking etc.

I wish to keep my old sim for the phone number and credit on it bumped up for a cancelled cruise and also I am on a good plan of 321.

So should I go to say the o2 store and buy the phone there and let them do it all for me or should I buy just the phone on line and go into a store and ask them to transfer it all over.
I should say I am not particularly tech savvy.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Not sure if it is still happening but mobile operators used to charge to transfer from one phone to another - I think it was around £30.

On the basis that you will probably need a new sim card anyway (you will be able to keep your number) as they have gone a lot smaller it will probably be easier, and quicker, to go into the shop as you will most likely have go in anyway.

For what it’s worth, have you thought about buying a sim free mobile phone and having a monthly contract. Sim free means you can add any mobile phone operators SIM card to you phone so your not tied to one particular mobile company (subject to contract length/terms). Also, depending on your use a monthly contract can be very cheap theses days, especially if you purchase the phone outright and add then add a monthly contract on.

I recently had a new phone and subsequently changed provider when I saw a better deal. As Stephen suggested I bought a mobile phone making sure it wasn't locked to any provider and simply swapped the SIM card over from the old phone to the new one (having made sure I had saved all my contacts etc onto the SIM card beforehand). Sometimes you do need to obtain a new card as there are different sizes nowadays.
Later on I found a better deal than the one I was on (Sky mobile £6pm unlimited texts and calls and 2Gb (?) of data which is much more than I need but any unused carries on to the next month). Changing from one provider to another was very simple and the new provider talked me through how to obtain the PAC code to transfer my number over (text 65075 with the message PAC) and all went smoothly using their instructions. The new SIM card also came with good instructions so it wasn't as daunting as you may think. And the PAC code didn't cost anything.

Maybe a good idea would be to check it out on Google if you are unsure.

That’s a good deal Foxy. I get unlimited calls and texts with 8GB data, which I never use, for just over £8 a month with ‘Three’.

Not long ago I purchased a new sim free mobile from John Lewis (longer warranty) and had to get a different size sim from Three. I just went into the 3 shop not too far from us and it was all sorted for me, including swapping over all the data from the old sim to the new one. Not only that, they put me on a better deal for a cheaper monthly price.

I did buy a new pay as you go. A Samsung galaxy with android 10. My old sim card was transferred to keep the deal I am on as they no longer offer that plan and it suits me.

It takes ages though to move everything over . Did look st the sky phone deals and thought they looked very good,worth considering in future.

There is an automatic blue tooth method of transferring the data from an old one to a new one, it took a few minutes for me.
