A half mile walk to the nearest red phone box and tip tapping, instead of dialing, the numbers in to get a free call :shifty:
I never managed that at red phone boxes, but I became expert at dialling by tapping the cradle on our works phones.

Apart from some ash from the fire in the living room and a few cans there was very little in the bin, most of it went on the compost heap

True enough, packaging was minimal and functional, and when empty it went on the fire, which was lit at least once a week all year round.

My father loved chitterlings and sheep's brains and pig's trotters - and my grandmother used to make brawn from the pig's head
