Re-sizing Photos
As many of you will already know, this forum has a maximum size of picture allowed as an avatar, which is 250x250.
My advice, after playing about a bit is....
1) if you want a generic picture (ie not one of your own), do a search in Google Images for your preference. You can narrow the search down by size to either "Medium" or "icon". When you find some possible choices, hover over the picture to see if it is suitably sized (ie below 250x250). If it is, then save it to your pictures file. Then click on it when prompted in the profile modfication process.
2) if you wish to use one of your own pictures then chances are it will be too large. Wina managed to resize an existing picture by right-clicking on it and selecting "Edit" in which there was a resize option. My pooter doesn't have this option so I used a web-based resizing program (which I have safely used before. http://www.picresize.com/ I used the "quick resize" option and saved the result to my disk (it went into "downloads").
A quick tip here...before resizing, I would make a copy of your original picture - this is the one to resize! With the quick reize option it's possible to select the finished size - I chose 250x250, which this forum accepted ok. The resizing may take a minute or two to complete - (your pooter might display the % completed in the bottom LH corner).
Of course it's also possible to resize a generic picture from the internet, if you can't find one small enough already.
I realise that the above is quite confusing...sorry for not being more precise and clear. Any information, just ask and I'll try to help.
PS The above advice is given in good faith, I assume the Resizing program is safe cos I've used it in the past - but there are others available too. Also, some internet images may be protected by copyright.

Manage to do it using Picasa - free to download and bit of fiddling around to get within the size (pixels / Kbs) but have manage to do it and quite an intuitive program to use.

Thanks Romig, following your instructions and a little help from my son as to where to find the downloaded image on the laptop, I've successfully shrunk not only the photie but myself included.

No problem Mrs007, just send a cheque for £25 and we'll call it quits?

That's a bargain Romig but you forgot the decimal point in the middle!
PS. as I no longer have my previous avatar (from my honeymoon over 30 years ago) saved on the computer, I have to own up to the present day me.

For generally resizing pictures I have always recommended
image resizer
Very easy to use and can do entire directories ready for posting to the web.

Re: Re-sizing Photos
I've just been practising with my mac - if you open a picture in preview you can resize it so I made it 200 x 150 megapixels, but it's still 25kb which I think is too big for the avatar isn't it?

Re: Re-sizing Photos
Elaine was it taken with that super doper camera of yours. That's probably why the pixels are so high.
Please will you e mail me the Santa photo by the tunnel.
Thanks x

Re: Re-sizing Photos
Romig, I need help with my photo resizing, the systen now says 100 X100 and less than 6kb. I have resized the one I want to use down to 100 X80 but it still is 12.8kb and is not accepted. Anything less and the picture is far too fuzzy, any suggestions?

Re: Re-sizing Photos
Towny, I would suggest saving as a GIF format instead of JPEG as GIF's are a smaller file size.

Re: Re-sizing Photos
I thought I was reasonably knowledgeable about these things.... I've resized a photo to 100 pixels square, size less than 4Kb, but I can't upload it! Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Re: Re-sizing Photos
Thanks for all your help but I have finally managed to resize a photo for an avatar by using the following:-
http://www.shrinkpictures.com/create-avatar/
This is much easier than the earlier version I used and worked first time for me without any problem.

I had a nice avatar that was 100 x 100 and 6kb that I was going to use, but it refused to upload it.
However, I had used this heart on a forum that I used a lot years ago, so I've used it instead. It's a bit smaller 64 x 64 ( I think), but it uploaded and does the job. Maybe try something a bit smaller?
