Dual Rate Electricity Tariffs

Unread post by david63 »

Anyone switched to one of these and if so what have been the savings.

I was looking at something else yesterday and came across these and as we have both a dishwasher and washing machine that have a time delay was thinking that some savings could be made.

Should there be a link to view David.

There useD to be things called ‘White Meters’ which measured off-peak electricity. Are they still around?

No - I was referring to these tariffs in general not to specific ones

"Duel Rate" - does that mean pistols at dawn .... sorry couldn't resist (it was what I was told every time I made that mistake when working for one of the utility companies).

They are very popular in Canada, my SIL has had such a tariff for years now, as they are so popular all meters have the facility to measure off peak and high peak usage, in fact I believe they have 3 rates.

With smart meters submitting readings in real time it should be technically easy. I guess the key is how low is the lower rate and does it cohe at the cost of a higher high rate. You can be pretty confident the energy companies won't be losing money. I presume from their side the benefit is soaking up all that power from wind turbines when we turn the lights off and go to bed.

One that I was looking at (Octopus) has a slightly higher daily rate than I am on now, peak rate is .5 pence higher but the off peak rate is one third of the peak rate.

That doesn't sound bad. I guess another factor is the hours for the lower rate. I have a friend with Octopus who is very happy with them.

Octopus always comes out top in the Which ratings. I am with OVO and did a price comparison but there was only about £5 difference so I stayed where I was.
I was taught to be cautious

With a little knowhow and soldering iron I’ve been able to cut my utility bills drastically :)
