Venison on the hoof.

Unread post by howard18 »

Found a deer romping around my garden this morning. don't think we get that many in Lincolnshire. Perhaps there are more of them about than I thought.

What with birds and squirrels I don't think I could accommodate a deer as well!!!
It's a lovely surprise to see one in your garden Howard as long as it doesn't cause damage. Maybe it's the advance party and you'll have a whole herd in the morning.
There was an item on the television recently saying how many more deer we have nowadays so although they are rather shy creatures maybe they are now becoming braver and venturing closer. Maybe you have particularly succulent grass.

I seem to recall a parkland in North Hykeham, just south of Lincoln, that had deer.... but that's going back many years

Get yourself a rifle-license, and quick. Get it shot, then string it up in your garage for a couple of weeks. Sorted!

S S, I never saw any deer but when I was young , we used to go picking bluebells in Doddington Woods.

Me R, How could you eat anything you had just destroyed. Easy , isn't the right answer. !!!

I don't think I probably would. I keep threatening the local wood-pigeons with buying an air-rifle when they pinch the nuts from the bird-table...but I haven't - yet! :D

Romig, I'm just the same with starlings, which bully all the other birds and then a flock of them destroy and clear up all the food.

I once attended a conference and one of the activities was a scenario whereby there were 4 in a car driving to the conference. On the way a deer runs into the road and is struck by the car. It is not killed outright but is badly injured. What would you do?
Our little group decided it would be cruel to leave it and as we had no means of killing it we would run over it again to put it out of its misery. We would then put it in the boot and deliver it to a nearby butcher for preparation.
In contrast the ladies were giving the poor thing the kiss of life!!!

Its the squirrels that rob the birds around here. At the weekend a partridge was eating the bits the squirrels had dropped and a robin just sat watching it.

I sometimes keep a pile of pebbles to chuck at the pesky squirrel!

We get quite a lot of the little muntjac deer in our area ( east anglia ) it's a shame really because they are regularly killed on the road, but I haven't seen one in our garden yet. The dog would probably put it off !

The friendly deer is grossly over populated in both urban and rural areas in my neck of the wood

Going off on a tangent:

I visited HMS Belfast at the weekend. One of the displays told of an incident where the Russians presented the ship with a reindeer called Olga for the ship's help with the Arctic convoys.

Unfortunately, the ship ended up at the Battle of North Cape, and the gunfire distressed Olga so much one of the ship's butchers had to put her out of her misery, poor thing.

Bet the officers' wardroom had a good post battle dinner!

I've seen a hilarious clip (possibly on youtube) of somebody's black cat chasing a deer around their garden..
