I'll blow and blow....
What a big bad wolf… we’ve lost a metre of roof tiles at the back of our house and two ridge tiles at the front. I’ve had hell of a game trying to contact a roofer but fingers crossed I’ve got one coming to assess tomorrow. The insurance company has given me the ok to get it made safe/repaired with the accessor coming out Monday. The local roofers were too busy so this chap is coming from 30 miles away…just hope he turns up.

Sorry to hear that Keith. A few years ago we had several tiles dislodged with a couple sliding off the roof and breaking and a couple of ridge tiles being knocked out of place. Got a roofer out to quote to fix them ... he came up with a quote of a few hundred quid so I was about to put it through insurance. We then found out one of the newer neighbour's SIL was a roofer ... one quick phone call and an hour later he had everything fixed. He wouldn't take any payment but asked if I would fix his computer for him ... good trade!!
Maybe if you offer to do a few favours for him your tiler might reduce his bill .... whistles innocently!!!

Thanks Ken…It’s times like this when you need a good roofer friend, unfurtunatly no one springs to mind.
I think its going to be a scaffolding job because the area of damage is above an extension so access would be very difficult with a ladder.
I’ll keep you informed with progress

Re: I'll blow and blow....
Sorry to hear about your roof problems Keith, I was always concerned about high winds and the potential damage it might do to our roof at our old house, which was in quite a high and exposed position. But since moving into our flat which has apartments both above and below, I now sleep soundly, even in high winds, although it might also be because I am going a bit deaf now.

Thanks John, the main damage is to the north facing side of the house and as we are detached it took the full force of what were very bad winds in this area. A friend/neighbour came this afternoon and said he thought our village was struck by a mini tornado which thinking about it is probably what woke me at 4am this morning.towny44 wrote: 27 Nov 2021, 22:41Sorry to hear about your roof problems Keith, I was always concerned about high winds and the potential damage it might do to our roof at our old house, which was in quite a high and exposed position. It’s not all bad news as I had a tenner on a 33/1 shot this afternoon.

If done properly and on the books I am sure they will use scaffolding. If done as a side job or off the books then a ladder and shoes with good grip is all they seem to need. I am amazed at the way a roofer walks about the roof. I used to have a head for heights, but not any more.Onelife wrote: 27 Nov 2021, 21:25Thanks Ken…It’s times like this when you need a good roofer friend, unfurtunatly no one springs to mind.

Are you sure it was the wind outside and not the pickled onions inside that caused the problem Keith
Hope it all gets sorted soon. If not we can do good B&B rates

I can see where you are coming from Stephen, but I had a molar out on Thursday so pickled onions are off the menu for a few days….Oh! and no thanks I’d rather stick with my cardboard box and leftovers from the garbage bin than get ripped off by you.Stephen wrote: 28 Nov 2021, 08:10Are you sure it was the wind outside and not the pickled onions inside that caused the problem Keith![]()

Tell me about it Ken...I fell off a ladder and sustained two fractured vertebrae and multiple fractures in both feet…feel the pain?Kendhni wrote: 28 Nov 2021, 07:19If done properly and on the books I am sure they will use scaffolding. Don’t take Stephen up on it OL. They’ve got that omnibus variant down his way.

Re: I'll blow and blow....
Oh, dear, just when you think it couldn’t get any worse…. I got the binoculars out this morning and what I thought was just a few tiles along the ridge tiles (front of House) now has turned into a major problem…a whole section has lifted behind the chimney stack.
Hold on it gets worse…the roofer came out this afternoon and informed me that due to the pitched roof having no felt under tiled roof he has said that any repair couldn’t come with a guarantee due to (I’ve checked this out) a repair on none felted roofs can cause more damage to the rest of the roof due to leaks.
We are expecting a surveyor to come out tomorrow? So, we’ll see what he thinks…. it’s looking increasingly likely that a new roof will be the only way forward…I’m guessing the insurance company will only pay for a repair, so that’s my wife’s Christmas present out of the window.
I’m setting up a forum funding page if anyone is interested?
P’s we’ve got water stains seeping onto the plaster in the loft space.
Happy Christmas

Can you not use your charm and convince her that a new roof IS her Christmas present?

Not the news you wanted to hear OL. Hopefully tomorrow you can get it tarped down just to keep the weather out whilst the surveyor does his business, the insurance gets sorted and you know what the outcome is.
Hope the Roller didn't get damaged....

Re: I'll blow and blow....
Wickes do various size tarpaulins
My B&B offers looking quite attractive now isn’t it. I must inform you though that the rates get higher the nearer we get to Christmas, and we don’t do evening meals unless you want to cook us something
Seriously though Keith it must be a nightmare. As Foxy mentioned, all that can be done in the interim is to make it as weatherproof as possible with a tarpaulin/s. Hope you get it sorted as soon as possible, although I think you will be on a long list with the roofer.
Easy to say, but chin up and try to keep smiling. What’s done is done.

All joking apart I hope the roofer has some means to make Keefys roof weatherproof even just as a temporary measure. I feel sure they will be able to get up there one way or another. Hope you get sorted.

Go for the re-tile and have the roof felted OL. I would have thought afterwards when the work is complete that the house may feel warmer as the wind will not be blowing through the tiles into the roof space. Good luck, hope it all goes well.
Don't worry, be happy

Thanks all…
Hi Ray,
The previous owners have boarded and plastered the loft space/under tile/roof space probably for the very reason you have suggested…. they probably didn’t want to got to the expense of a new roof.
I’ve had a couple of companies phone this morning but can’t fit me in until after Christmas, the chap that came out yesterday has got back to me with a quote. All that being said I’ve checked out his website/reviews https://www.jpricecontractor.com/ and they read well…he is registered with company house and can start next week.
I’m hoping the insurance assessor gets back to me today which will give us some idea about how much extra we will have to find to get the whole roof done.
I am so stressed that I feel like wringing one of our chickens’ necks
…I was up at 4am looking for more roofing companies.
