Reported in our local paper. the James Paget Hospital Gt Yarmouth has nine out of ten patients in intensive care that have not been vaccinated. Time taking up by the nursing staff who could be attending to those that have tried to protect themselves
A good example that the vaccine works for those that receive it.

I was reading only the other day about a girl who need potentially life saving surgery but was unable to have the procedure as there were no IC beds available due to the unvaccinated occupying them.

I will accept that a very small number of those may not be able to be vaccinated for medical reasons, or have not been able to have their two/three does of vaccine.

I fully respect people's view that they don't want to be vaccinated but I do not believe that that view extends to taking up valuable NHS resources. If you don't want to take up the protection that the NHS are giving out then don't expect the NHS to pick up the pieces when it goes pear shaped for you - is my view.

The contra view I have heard says there is no difference between them and smokers and drinkers who make a lifestyle choice but are still entitled to medical care.
It's a strong argument but when the NHS critical care services are being swamped by those who have made a conscious decision not to be vaccinated they should not be taking up bed space when there are more deserving cases of urgent need.

Little wonder the NHS runs short of funds when you consider the breadth of "treatments" they are asked to provide.

I would imagine most of us who are awaiting an operation will agree with your sentiment Foxy.

I think a precedent has already been made regarding treatment in hospitals as many patients are advised to lose weight before a surgeon is prepared to commence treatment…which to my mind is no different from those who are advised to get jabbed but refuse to do so…

therefor they should join the waiting list like everyone else.

The bizarre thing is the stats about the unvaccinated people being in intensive care are widely publicised but still the anti vaxxers and covid deniers dismiss them.

While I fully agree with you Keith and with others, whether we like it or not the NHS has an ethical obligation to treat all patients according to their need.

But that ethical need does not prevent the NHS prioritising one need above another!

There is a slight difference in that the NHS do not offer jabs to everyone to prevent them smoking and drinking - and yes I know that there are treatments available on the NHS

We should also note that many of the NHS staff have not been jabbed also that If things run to form then too many holiday bookings and sickies will prevail in the Hospitals throughout the festive season.

It will be interesting because the Secretary of States statement says that NHS workers must be fully vaccinated by 1st April 2022
I don’t know what fully vaccinated is now.
Two doses or two plus the booster?
I believe that would now be impossible for anyone who hasn’t received a first jab.

We have a friend who is an administrator in the east Lancs NHS trust, she told us there are approximately 65000 nhs staff unvaccinated.!

Info from a main South African Hospital in Soweto suggests that their ' IT ' guests are 65% unvaccinated and 35% partially vaccinated ... no surprises there then. Their population average is considerably lower than ours.

When you consider all the different departments working within the NHS it probably only amounts to three or four in each trust…. easy solution…. Sack the lot of them for ethical irresponsibility.

Not sure I would agree with that. Using those figures you are looking at around 1 in 20 of all NHS employees not vaccinated which, on today's figures, is twice the national average of 1 in 45

I shouldn't have said Hospital trusts as I based my calculations on the number of hospitals which is around 1200 in the UK.

I’m actually surprised that it doesn’t contravene the NHS duty of care code.
Similarly with care homes.
We have to jump through so many hoops to visit Mum while they had staff who were unvaccinated.

Our friend also said that a lot of them are junior doctors.!

The problem is you can’t just sack them because there are no ready replacements.
