The latest cobblers (in my view) is that Maureen Lipman says Helen Mirren shouldn't play a Jewish woman, because she's not Jewish.

My first, and fundamental point, is they are actors. Their talent (those that have it) is playing characters whom they are not.

But if we take this to its logical extreme, presumably Maureen Lipman would not wish to play someone who was not Jewish.

Someone who is not a secret agent cannot play James Bond.

Someone who is gay cannot play anyone straight.

Someone who is not a detective cannot play Poirot or Miss Marple or appear in Line of Duty.

Someone Irish or American cannot play someone English.

Only a serial killer can play a serial killer and only a rapist can play a rapist.

If you can't fly you can't play Batman and if you can't travel in time forget applying to be Dr Who.

You have to be Royalty to play Henry 8th.

What a load of tosh.

I know that it is unforgivable of me but I always thought that journalists had a modicum of common sense - so why ask Boris about the way that Australia have dealt with Novak Djokovic? Do they expect him to say that it is wrong and that he should be allowed in? (No need to answer) Of course Boris is going to say that it is up to the Australian Government how the handle the situation.

Was that not a journalist assuming that a politician had a modicum of common sense?

Very true, no different to similar 'outrage' about Jodie Turner-Smith playing Anne Boleyn or, now that James Bond has been killed off, the uproar about a female or coloured actor taking over the role of 007.

At times I wonder if the studios/producers actually make the headlines by deliberately sewing the seeds of indignation themselves ... in an attempt to get the Karen's of society to give them free advertising.

I despair - these are our future and some appear to not care https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-59898968

I bet if you told them that wearing a mask would save the planet they would have them on in next to no time and become indignant when others did not wear them!

Unbelievable, now they have covid and could still face a fine. They still have to get home, but having covid must now cost them dear.

How many of the NHS staff off sick with COVID are amongst those that are unvaccinated.?
Selfish comes to mind when they are putting pressure on their colleagues and service they claim to hold dear.!

I imagine many are having to isolate because of being a close contact of someone infected, and most of the others have only mild symptoms, or are even asymptomatic. I doubt therecare many left in the NHS who are unvaccinated, wasn't there are deadline of next month for them get jabbed or lose their jobs?

Not sure about the last part John but as I posted last month, a friend of ours works for the East Lancs NHS trust and she stated there were approximately 65000 staff including doctors unvaccinated. Our daughter works for the NHS and even though her husband tested positive she is allowed to work if she tests negative on a daily basis until hubby is negative. She has tested negative all the time.

Vaccinated or not it does not prevent you from being Covid positive. The vaccination is there to prevent serious illness.

If they refuse to wear a mask send them home.
Exactly that. Send them home with a note for their parents telling them not to come back until they are willing to comply. And remind the parents that in the meantime they are responsible for their care and their education. If they're not back in a week send another letter telling them they have seven more days to return and conform or their place at the school is withdrawn and they need to find somewhere else. I'm willing to bet that in many cases the parents are in collusion with or even instigated the refusal. Time to stop pussy footing around.

Whilst I agree with you can you imagine the uproar from parents? The local rag would be camped outside the school gates, TV cameras trained on the school entrance, Socialist Worker would be there with their banners and the activists proclaiming their human rights to education were being denied them would be screaming loudly.
What it needs is for the government to come out and make it mandatory that face masks be worn and make it clear that children without masks will be sent home. Those who cannot wear masks for whatever reason should wear a visor. We are far too soft in this country.
We went into town yesterday and Omicron is rife up here at the moment but I was staggered by the number of adults in shops not wearing masks and neither were their teenage offspring. It's hardly surprising that the virus is spreading.

What we need is more Mrs S's. But hopefully it wont come to that ;)

She had a polite but forceful run in with a member of the pharmacy we use and their manager this afternoon about staff either not wearing masks or not wearing masks correctly either behind the screens or when moving from one area of the pharmacy to another, yet they have a clear message on the dividing screen about how it is a requirement for people coming into the pharmacy to wear them.

I’m now too frightened to show my face in there again :) .
