Having recently had the misfortune of having to transit through Heathrow recently - my suggestion would be to scrap it and have everyone fly out of Liverpool

Rather silly and facetious repose to a very important matter, and anyway Blackpool airport is far preferable to Liverpool. Don't mention Manchester the crime capital of the North

If we were looking to distribute the country's wealth why not develop Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Newcastle? Surely businesses would be more amenable to relocating away from the capital if there were decent air links. It doesn't make sense other than our politicians' fascination with the capital city.

it wont be long before london is one big airport
Birmingham or Manchester are far more sensible choices
btw half the "London" airports are no where near the uk crime capital anyway

Re: Third Runway at Heathrow ?
I've said this before, but there's a perfectly good runway at Northolt. Internal/short-haul flights could fly from there, leaving more space at Heathrow for the long-haul flights. There are several airfields that share facilities with the RAF, a new entrance could be built for civil use off the A40.
Had commercial greed not over-ruled, they should have developed Filton instead of closing it down - with its proximity to the motorway network and railway, that would have been just as suitable as Birmingham and Southampton.

There is only 7 miles between Heathrow and Northolt which is surely far too close for safety, wouldn't get my vote nor those, I dare say, who live in their very expensive houses in the locale.Silver_Shiney wrote:I've said this before, but there's a perfectly good runway at Northolt. Heathrow's runways run east-west, Northolt's SWW-NEE, NW-SE - plenty of room for aircraft to turn. Besides, Northolt is (certainly was when we lived under the flight path) designated "London Airport (Military)" and, for years, there has been no issue with HS125, BAe146, helicopter and the occasional Hercules traffice co-existing with Heathrow.
I agree that those in the immediate area wouldn't be happy but, frankly, there's so much air traffic that the effect of increased usage would be negligible. The main isue would be road access, which is why I suggest a new entrance off the A40.

Re: Third Runway at Heathrow ?
As I said before, Heathrow is a hub and this would not work very well with two separate airports.

Hub or not, Heathrow is not convenient for everybody, either as a departure or arrival airport. Maybe Runway 3 gives an opportunity for a bit of lateral thinking instead of a mistaken belief that everybody needs/wants to fly out of an already congested Heathrow.

Re: Third Runway at Heathrow ?
Exactly. It's not just Heathrow that's congested, it's the access facilities to it. I used to live in Uxbridge. It took me as long to get from there to my office off Trafalgar Square as it did from where I live now. IMHO, it would be far better to hive off routes to other airports away from London and its environs.oldbluefox wrote:Hub or not, Heathrow is not convenient for everybody, either as a departure or arrival airport. Dear debators
you forget that the centre of our politicians world is London and as long as this is the case ,common sense will play no part, I wonder how long it will be before they concrete over most of london as a car park, coz that's where everyone wants to be? and they need to be able to park somewhere
why everyone wants to be there is beyond me, but I am just a psuedo Yorkie, so what do I know
