Plans are being draw up for a massive solar farm in Morocco. It will link the UK via a 3800 km cable coming ashore in Cornwall and will supply 8%of our needs.

A spokesperson for Xlinks promised that the undersea cable would result in bills savings for consumers, which is a particularly attractive proposition as fossil fuels energy crisis raised the energy bills to a record £1,971 in April..

Somehow I think I have heard that promise before, when the north sea gas fields were being developed..

I remember that being considered years ago ... about the same time as they were talking about towing icebergs to help irrigate the Sahara. Maybe technology has advanced far enough to make it viable now. It always made sense to me that those countries with high levels of sunshine could become power farms for those countries, like the British Isles, that need to import it ... beneficial to both parties. As long as the profits are ploughed back into the likes of Morocco then it sounds like a good proposition and not an excuse to profiteer of the back of poorer nations (like we have done with oil).

In other news I see more witnesses have come forward to suggest that Angela Rayner did actually boast about her Boris distraction tactics in the bar. Surely such a nice woman as her wouldn't do that just so she could scream misogyny when someone repeated it?

We really need an even longer cable so it can be in the Southern hemisphere where the sun is out when we need to turn our lights on and heating up in the evenings.

That's true. It's the current that causes the power loss. So it needs to be high-voltage and low current, like national grid power lines. And cables as thick as possible to give least resistance.

I'm no expert on these things but I was always led to believe that electricity looses its power the longer the cable - so with a 3800 km cable there will only be a trickle coming through!

If they are thinking about this then I am guessing they must have a solution. If I remember my physics correctly then they have to boost the voltage up to something like 750,000V to get it to travel a few hundred miles. No idea how they will get it to travel a couple of thousand miles though.

Their master plan could be to ' swap ' banks of batteries on e-cars to save using the power needed to charge them here in the UK. It can be done, Tesla already do it
