Mind Blowing Distances

Unread post by Stephen »

I’ve been looking at the images of the James Webb telescope which are unbelievable, particularly the Carina Nebula image which is 7,600 light-years from Earth.

Mrs S asked how far is that, not having a clue myself I Googled it……it turns out just 1 light year in miles equates to 6 Trillion miles. And this particular image is 7,600 light years away. Get your head around that :o

It’s mind blowing. I’m not sure I have much idea about it. The Sun is 93million miles from earth that’s about 8-9 light minutes. As you watch that romantic and magnificent sunset over the Med at 9:20 pm, just bear in mind that the Sun dropped over the horizon at 9:12pm(ish). It could even have exploded at 9.18 pm and you’d still see your glorious sunset.

I think I read somewhere that there are at least 10,000 universes in a grain of sand.

Your right Keith. The numbers are just too big to fathom.

At the opposite end of the spectrum are
- a 'shake of a lambs tail' (aka shake) is defined as 10-8 seconds (10 nanoseconds)
- 'a 'jiffy' (as in just a jiffy) is defined as 3x10-24 seconds (approximates to how long light takes to travel 1 foot)

A very interesting program shown on BBC 2 last night on the story of the 30 years in the development of the James Webb Telescope.
Well worth watching on catch up I player.
Don't worry, be happy
