Whatever it is, it’s obviously more important than governing the countryoldbluefox wrote: 16 Jul 2022, 16:43I would expect that Boris is fully entitled to make use of Chequers no matter what The Independent () says. Whether it's for his leaving party, his wedding reception or just a knees up is of no concern to me. As far as I know he won't be breaking any rules unless The Independent knows better.

I feel sure the country will cope. He doesn't run the country on his own.
First you want him out then you want him back in 10 Downing Street to chair a meeting which they can manage just as well if not better without him.

That question would be in the same vein as asking who the Boris buttkissers will hero worship next.Manoverboard wrote: 17 Jul 2022, 08:09When Boris has finally hung up his boots ( see what I did there ? ) I wonder who Ken and Gill will chose to target ?

There’s certainly quite a lot of buttkissers in the conservative party and most of them will be in Sunak’s cabinet if he’s allowed to get in…same old same old.

Re: Current Affairs
Same as in any other party, all trying to curry favour 'just in case'.
One of the best was the Corbyn butt-kissing Fest complete with singing. That didn't go as well as they expected but there are still the hangers on so it's not completely dead in the water,; they just don't like to talk about it.

I recorded Sohie on the bbc this morning and watched both Tugendhat and Mordaunt interviews.
I was pretty impressed with both for what it’s worth.

Good interview with Admiral Sir Tony Radakin following on from the Panorama documentary.barney wrote: 17 Jul 2022, 12:22I recorded Sohie on the bbc this morning and watched both Tugendhat and Mordaunt interviews.

I must admit I was never impressed by anything I had seen of Tugendhat and in that interview he did focus a great deal on defence and international affairs. However he performed very well when talking about other issues. He came across as a very clear thinker and certainly not out of the race...........yet.
Penny Mordaunt got off to a very slow start, seemed rather nervous and wishy-washy but improved as the interview went on and became much more strident. I do like her but of the two Tugendhat surprised me. If he doesn't win I believe he would make a very good minister.

Re: Current Affairs
While I would be a Sunak supporter that is my concern. I am hoping that he, or whichever candidate wins, moves quickly to distance the party from the status quo ... they must be able to provide something different including reintroducing honesty and integrity back into the tory party and actually creating some policies. They also need to move the party back towards the middle ground. The big advantage in the favour of a new leader, is that Johnson set such a low bar that even double jointed fleas could not limbo under it.Onelife wrote: 17 Jul 2022, 12:00There’s certainly quite a lot of buttkissers in the conservative party and most of them will be in Sunak’s cabinet if he’s allowed to get in…same old same old.![]()
The only one that I see that would fail on moving the party forward is Truss ... electing her would mean that the tories have learned nothing on why the majority of electorate now reject Johnson and his conservatism. Although that would allow the 'whataboutery' brigade to continue blaming everyone else.

I know why you consider the current govt have moved to the right, but really, Brexit apart, Boris was always a centrist, which is why he was such a staunch advocate of the levelling up agenda.Kendhni wrote: 17 Jul 2022, 13:11While I would be a Sunak supporter that is my concern. Re: Current Affairs
As Lord Mayor, Johnson was much more centrist, but as a PM he has certainly moved significantly to the right. I don't think he himself is overly right wing but that is the direction he has taken the tory party. Groucho Marx once said 'these are my principles, and if you don't like them ... well I have others' ... that pretty much sums up Johnson (and Truss) they change direction with whatever they believe is good for themselves (not the party, not the country and not anybody else).towny44 wrote: 17 Jul 2022, 13:55I know why you consider the current govt have moved to the right, but really, Brexit apart, Boris was always a centrist, which is why he was such a staunch advocate of the levelling up agenda.

I'm working on some alliteration for the inevitable post contest sniping.
Mordaunt Mashers, Sunak Smashers or Truss Trashers.
None have the same ring as Boris Bashers. But who knows, optimistically we might be able to move on and I won't need them.

I don’t know why anybody would want the job of PM. Your dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t.
