Dog owners.

Unread post by wolfie »

With the snow upon us the roads are now being gritted, if you walk your dog on gritted roads/paths please make sure that their paws are washed either by walking them through a few puddles away from the gritted surfaces or by dipping their feet in fresh water once at home. A warning sent out by animal charities yesterday stated that hundreds of pets throughout the country are becoming seriously ill and in some cases dying because of the rock salt and antifreeze being used during the cold snap. Dogs and cats are walking through the substances left by gritters trying to clear roads and car drivers defrosting their windscreens and then licking them off their paws. Consuming rock salt can cause dehydration, liver failure and pancreatitis, while antifreeze contains the chemical ethylene glycol, which can be lethal when ingested.

Good point Wolfie.

We used to bathe our German Shepherd's paws in a bowl when we arrived home. She was trained to lift her paws on demand!

Having Old English Sheepdogs they have their feet washed every time they come back anyway...but a good point to mention. Do people also realise Chocolate is deadly to dogs?

I had always done this with our own dogs but had a timely reminder from the company that I have registered with to have dogs spend their holiday with us, now that we have lost our own dog and can't contemplate having another just now.

Julie would always wipe the dogs feet after a walk.

I have seen this before and wondered if it was true or an urban legend?

we always clean the woofies feet when they have been out, regardless of the weather as you never know , if say the council have been out weed killing or pest controling and you don't know what they have been spraying
we also clean them after a walk on the beach, as again you never know what is on there

There is special doggie choclate available ;)

Thank you Wolfie for this important reminder, I forwarded it to my daughter as she and her partner have a Chihuahua and a Newfoundland, she was aware, as their local vets always send out a reminder.

Just to add to the chocolate (except doggie choccie, thanks DN) that is dangerous to dogs, onions and grapes should also never be given.

Do I need to give my pussy a wipe over too ?

ONIONS? - what kind of idiot feeds onions to their dog anyway. More to the point, what kind of dog would eat an onion ?

I hope that they are both the same sex or have been relieved of their bits

Wolfie, they are thankfully both males but I must admit are very funny when seen together. Louie the long-haired Chihuahua weighs only 8lbs and Murphy the Newfoundland 15 1/2 Stones but guess who's the boss?

Yep, it's the tiny one with the Napoleon complex, who thinks he's just as big as his massive hairy friend.
