Re: [Split] Current Affairs - The Queen
I see wearing black or at least a black tie out of respect was too much to ask for the US president Joe Biden when being received at Stansted airport.

Re: [Split] Current Affairs - The Queen
I read online ‘The Telegraph’ that Harry isn’t invited to the reception tonight at Buckingham Palace because he is no longer a working Royal. I assume that includes uncle ‘hands on’ Andrew.
How true that is and if that’ll be over ridden by Charles we shall see.

To be fair he's a pensioner. Even older than me. And I'm not keen on buses either, travelling with the riff raff.Stephen wrote: 18 Sep 2022, 17:50And he thinks he’s above travelling on a bus tomorrow like the rest of them.

The president’s bodyguards will have deemed the risk as too high.Stephen wrote: 18 Sep 2022, 17:50And he thinks he’s above travelling on a bus tomorrow like the rest of them.
I doubt any US president would be allowed to use anything other than their heavily armoured car.

Sorry but our country, our rules - either bus it or clear off back home.
This is all about one person and it is not him.

Today's funeral of our beloved Queen was so unique, so beautiful, so perfect, so British. She got a wonderful send off that all of us should be very proud of.
May Queen Elizabeth II rest in peace. Thank you mam, for everything.

What a fantastic, but sad day, of British pageantry.
Her Majesty would have been proud of what the country put together for her (and well deserved).
Some other take away's from today though
- the six Royal Navy men at the centre of those pulling the carriage looked to be about 1 foot taller than those around them
- Sky auto subtitling needs an overhaul and came up with some amusing substitutions
- Harry's resting face looks like he is very angry

I did notice the the King almost lost it at the end.
And weren't George and Charlotte just so perfect?

What a send off. No one does it like us. It makes you proud to be British.
I was ok until the Queens lone piper at Westminster Abbey started playing and gradually faded into the distance, very moving. I then somehow got something in my eye.
Your finally at rest ma’am. God bless you.
God save the King.

Is there ever likely to be another head of state's funeral with so many other heads of state and international dignitaries present. We have lost a truly global superstar.

What an amazing day doing what the British do best - I held my breath when the pall bearers handled the coffin - they were all young lads with such a responsibility but more than coped - they were magnificent. I’ve shed a few tears today - brought back memories of my mother who died in 2020 during the pandemic

Nothing to add really. An amazing day carried our to perfection at every moment. I was nervous for the pall bearers too, especially up those steps at Windsor. And maybe they need to get the hearse driver a cushion. He could barely see over the top of the steering wheel..

I felt so proud of all those who took part in the proceedings today. What a magnificent send off to Her Majesty.
Also from reports we have seen, what a wonderful job has been carried out by those involved in organising the lying in state especially the volunteer groups who gave their time to ensure it went smoothly.

Re: [Split] Current Affairs - The Queen
I read this morning that those wonderful Grenadiers who carried the Queen's coffin so magnificently also, later carried the coffin in the burial place beneath St. George's Chapel to it's final resting place so now in the special side chapel lay King George VI, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, the ashes of Princess Margaret and now Queen Elizabeth II alongside her beloved husband, Prince Philip. The only way Princess Margaret could be there was if she was cremated and so that was what happened. So the Grenadiers performed the final service for their late Monarch. I hope they get some recognition for their service, not that they would expect any, and I'm sure they will. The whole day brought the country together, maybe not for long, but it was certainly together yesterday.

A bit of light relief
It's the story of a former Cabinet Minister making polite conversation with a familiar looking woman at an upmarket Mayfair party in the mid 60s, couldn't quite place her. Actress? Socialite?
Then she mentioned "my sister".
"Ah yes, your sister, what's she up to nowadays?"
"Still Queen", replied Princess Margaret.

I suspect they and others that participated may receive a medal commemorating the event.CaroleF wrote: 20 Sep 2022, 10:32So the Grenadiers performed the final service for their late Monarch. I hope they get some recognition for their service, not that they would expect any, and I'm sure they will.

I understood that they will be awarded a ' Commemorative Group ' Title whose name escapes me at the moment.

I don't suppose that there is any chance that the country, and politicians, can maintain the recent calm and togetherness that has abounded for the past week.

Re: [Split] Current Affairs - The Queen
One thing that i have found somewhat of concern is that on the BBC there has been no reporting of any dissenting groups or protests about the Monarchy this last week (other than a couple of minor incident) - I cannot believe for one minute that there has not been any. I can perhaps understand why there has been nothing reported but it could be considered censorship - the Beeb's job is to report the news not decide what should or should not be reported.

There has been the odd report in a few of the papers but generally, I think the Republicans probably thought, time and place.
Should demonstrators have been highly visible, they would have been arrested for their own safety, then released.
