Re: Current Affairs
After the failure and the waste of tens of millions with the hairbrained embarrassment of Rwanda, the tories next cockamamie scheme has been to send millions to Albania to improve the standard of living so that Albanians won't want to leave. How many more failures are the tories willing to finance until they reach the inevitable conclusion that they need to reopen the safe/legal channels for migrants.

Re: Current Affairs
If the conditions at the Manston detention centre are so bad, I wonder if the illegal immigrants would like to be returned to the 5 star luxury of their tented encampments in Callais?

Not to mention the diseases they bring with them. Widely reported that Diphtheria has broken out.

Not all screwy, Suella Braverman is considering using hotels for spot bookings being used by the public. So after you book your £200 a night room, the next room may contain some boat people you have also contributed too as well.screwy wrote: 31 Oct 2022, 13:50We’ll I was going to book a hotel for a few nights UK break, but apparently they’re all going to be booked by the Home Office.!

Re: Current Affairs
I have mixed views about the idea of opening safe legal channels for migration.
Part of me sees the humane logic.
Another part says it's like saying we can stop shop lifting by just giving stuff away in shops.
Plus a safe legal route won't stop illegal immigrants using boats as they know they won't get in the other way.

Re: Current Affairs
But we seem to have considered every legal as well as semi legal ways of slowing down the demand, and none work. So we either accept that thousands will continue to seek asylum in the UK ad infinitum, or we take the gloves off and start playing it rough.
Which should it be?

Re: Current Affairs
For my money if they are illegal immigrants they shouldn't be here and should be sent back whence they came.
Open up legal routes and determine who comes in and who doesn't.
Show a bit of mettle and take responsibility instead of pandering. Lawyers will fight for their rights but don't have to deal with the aftermath.

They've already gone OL. Some of our coastal towns suffer immense deprivation with HMOs , drugs, alcohol addiction, violence taking over the traditional holiday trade.
Perhaps we need to resolve our own issues before absorbing uncontrolled illegal immigration.

Strictly speaking many of these are not immigrants per se they are asylum seekers and there is no such thing as an illegal asylum seeker.Onelife wrote: 31 Oct 2022, 23:40If opposition parties/journalists don’t cut Braverman a bit of slack we will never get on top of illegal immigration issue.
After 12 years of promises to do something about it, you would think that the tories might have made some headway ... how wrong we were.
Braverman needs to tone her rhetoric down a bit, she is just inflaming the situation in the same way as Farage did.
I am disappointed that Sunak is allowing this circus to continue, I thought he stood for honesty, integrity and accountability, so far he seems to be following the old strategy that Johnson relied on ... when under pressure get a good immigration story onto the front pages ... it is a good diversionary tactic.

We are not alone in the fight to control those trying to enter our country by illegal means. Spain has the same problems, and last June 24 things went terribly wrong at the border of Mellila North Africa. The BBC News today has this in depth report of the tragic day.

I would argue that there is such thing as an illegal asylum seeker, especially those that flee a safe country to that of their own choosing. The only thing that makes this open to question is that we have in place asylum laws which allow this to happen, laws I would suggest that were introduced without understanding the consequences that such illegal invasions would have on individual countries.Kendhni wrote: 01 Nov 2022, 07:47Strictly speaking many of these are not immigrants per se they are asylum seekers and there is no such thing as an illegal asylum seeker.Onelife wrote: 31 Oct 2022, 23:40If opposition parties/journalists don’t cut Braverman a bit of slack we will never get on top of illegal immigration issue.

Re: Current Affairs
No sense in arguing that with me ... you would need to argue that with the 1951 convention which the UK is a signatory to ... it provides anyone with the right to apply for asylum in any country that has signed the 1951 Convention and to remain there until the authorities have assessed their claim.Onelife wrote: 01 Nov 2022, 10:19I would argue that there is such thing as an illegal asylum seeker, especially those that flee a safe country to that of their own choosing. No she isn't, she is inflaming the situation, especially on a day when a man carried out a petrol bomb attack (fortunately he then went on to do the right thing). Her rhetoric shows that she is not fit to hold a post of responsibility ... she is looking for ways to punish those that dare rather than address and resolve the situation.Suella Braverman is absolutely correct in her rhetoric and I for one applauded her for it.

We were correct in getting ourselves out of the EU and we should now take the next step and leave the EHCR…. as well as pulling ourselves out of all international migrant treaties.
Her rhetoric Ken is one that is gaining momentum across the whole of the country and will continue to do so until such time that decisive action is taken. If we fail to get to grips with this situation, it won’t be anti-immigration bomb throwers that we need to worry about it will be weapon carrying Albanians protesting that they are being treated unfairly who we’ll need to worry about.

Re: Current Affairs
Immigration always has and always will be a contentious discussion.
Some are for, some against.
I’m personally quite pro immigration but totally anti uncontrolled immigration which is what we had while members of the EU.
The south east and east anglia where literally over run by Eastern European immigration.
In many cases, it totally changed the make up of towns.
Of course, those who live in areas hardly affected would never have realised this because it’s not on their doorstep.
The current illegal immigration problem needs to spread evenly around the nations of the U.K..
An equal four way split between the four U.K. countries.
When faux liberals actually get the problem on their own doorstep, opinions will change.
A hotel in Tintagel Cornwall was approached about becoming an asylum hotel.
The owner could have made good money but declined because of the impact on the community.
A hotel in Ilfracombe has provisionally agreed but has now had a legal challenge from residents because of the impact on the community.
I view it in the same way as I do with Irish Travellers.
The only people who don’t have an issue with them are the people who have had no contact with them.

What's wrong with the word invasion, it describes the numbers of boat people coming ashore in the south in a way that most can understand the gravity of the situation we are in. Estimates put the numbers by the year end at 40,000.

Re: Current Affairs
I assume you mean the ECHR ... damn those workers rights, rights for parents, rights for minorities, rights for children, rights for pensioners, rights for the disabled, that the British voted for ... stamp the whole lot out and have a free for all.Onelife wrote: 01 Nov 2022, 12:09We were correct in getting ourselves out of the EU and we should now take the next step and leave the EHCR…. as well as pulling ourselves out of all international migrant treaties.
Even Truss recognised the need the UK has for tens of thousands of migrants to come to the UK. More than one person has said that is the source of the argument between Truss and Braverman ... Truss wanted Cruella to put measures in place to attract much needed foreign workers.
'Decisive action'? That is what the tories have been promising for 12 years and have failed to deliver anything close. So if we fail to get to grips then that is the governments failing, not anybody elses. They have thrown £billions and thousands of people and, as usual, delivered very little. Her rhetoric Ken is one that is gaining momentum across the whole of the country and will continue to do so until such time that decisive action is taken. Do you not think you are maybe going a little bit overboard with the 'weapon carrying Albanians' comments? Or do we also add 'weapon carrying iranians', 'weapon carrying iraqis', 'weapon carrying afghans' etc.? Are we also scared of 'weapon carrying doctors', 'weapon carrying nurses', weapon carrying construction workers', 'weapon carrying farm labourers? That is a lot of weapons they must be smuggling into the good old motherland ... or maybe Braverman stands at the gates of the detention centres handing a gun and machete to each person as they leave!
Don't worry the government, during our economic crisis, is now sending £millions to Albania to help sort it out ... might actually work better than the international embarrassment of flights to Rwanda.

Re: Current Affairs
A simple test of whether the people in the boats are illegal immigrants or not. Do those who are not intercepted en-route report immediately to the authorities to lodge their asylum claim? I suspect we know the answer.
Trying to dodge this issue is the mistake several Prime Ministers made (from both main parties - remember Gordon Brown's overheard dismissive "Bigot" comment") and led directly to the rise of UKIP and the Brexit Referendum. Legal controlled immigration is great and helps the economy. Uncontrolled immigration is a disaster for everyone, including the migrants.

Barney, maybe your council has not had to spend thousands of pounds of public money to clear up the crap and rubbish they leave behind and then spend more on the damage. Plus add to that the loss of income when they pitch up in the public car parks and the inconvenience to the users.barney wrote: 01 Nov 2022, 12:50A hotel in Ilfracombe has provisionally agreed but has now had a legal challenge from residents because of the impact on the community.

They say they are just having their holiday and will move on soon at sea side resorts. All free paid for by the rate payers.

I know exactly what’s going on with the Irish Travellers.
South Devon has regular rock ups but us in the north of the county have been lucky so far.
We have friends in a village outside Maidstone who actually had to sell their home because of Irish Travellers.

Maidstone Prison is a cat C prison holding exclusively foreign prisoners.
600 plus inmates of which over half are from Albania.
Given that Albania isn’t and has never been an EU nation, it’s pretty safe to assume that the majority of them are also illegal entrants.

I did indeed mean ECHR…the very body that make it very difficult to remove/prosecute terrorists… without costing the country millions in legal fees. the laws that don’t allow free speech for fear of offending, the laws that every member country should try and adhere to but don’t. the laws that allow women to be subservient to their cultural masters. Laws that have done little to improve the living standards of the poorest in society, laws that protect the rights of illegal immigrants.
Truss was recognising the need to attract migrants that can add value to our ecomny, not encourage those who come here to become a recipient of our overstretched bennift system.
Decisive action…will always struggle in a political system that works against itself. The millions which are being sent to Albania is a result of indecisive action perpetrated by the opposition party.
