The Coronation and Schoolchildren

Unread post by CaroleF »

When my 7 year old grandaughter was visiting last weekend I was showing her the commemoration mug I was given at school when the Queen was crowned in 1953. I've also got ones of the coronation of George VI and one my mother had of Edward VIII, who of course was never crowned. I wondered if the school children today will be given one next year when Charles is crowned, I somehow doubt it. If it was suggested there'd probably be an outcry given the current economic situation. I don't know how the 1953 ones were paid for. My brother, who was not at school in1953, also had one but with a different picture of the Queen, and smaller. Maybe he got it from the Clinic in the days when mothers took their babies to the Clinic and were given that wonderful Orange Juice and Castor Oil, not so wonderful! I did tell my grandaughter that if she wasn't given one at school I would buy her one. Apparently today she told her teacher all about our conversation and my promise so I will have to remember, not that she'll let me forget!

Probably not the reply you are expecting Carole but my contribution will more than likely get the royalists chomping at the bit.

For those who feel we need a Monarchy I can see that dishing out commemorative mugs to the young and impressionable as a good idea, especially so, now that the younger generations are turning their backs on the worth of having a Monarchy.

I consider myself to be a Royalist but at a time when food banks are increasingly becoming the norm for so many it would, for me, be wholy wrong to fund commemorative mugs.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

Since these are infrequent, but significant events, I do believe that it is worthwhile providing some sort of momento to school age children.

The last lot of ‘platinum’ mugs cost the tax payer in excess of 12 million…. I’m sure Charlie could find a better way of promoting a life of privilege other than wasting the money on having his mug on a mug.
