Re: Current Affairs
I'm pleased the topic has been raised, I had thought of posting about it myself. I appreciate that Onelife has completely different views of the monarchy than I have and he is entitled to his opinion. I have never understood why it is acceptable to call anyone, let alone the King and Queen Consort by horrible names, why is it necesssary to call the King 'Charlie'? I think eventually, and in fact it's already happening, the Queen Consort will just be referred to as the Queen in the same way that Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother was referred to as the Queen when George VI was on the throne. The woman who marries the King automatically becomes Queen. By all means let people who disagree with the fact that Britain has a monarchy explain why they think it's wrong and why they want things changed but don't do it by calling people by slang or unpleasant names.

Re: Current Affairs
Unfortunately Carole this is more and more excepted way of talking about people, with little or no respect today.
The TV news has for years spoke of Thatcher, Blair, Sunak and Trump as examples, these people no matter the story line all have a title. Disrespect today runs through society and is out of control.

For what it's worth I agree with Ray and Carole. I don't even like some calling Sir Keir, Sir Hindsight it play ground name calling and everyone is so much better than that.

Re: Current Affairs
I think you'll find that originated with and was in response to the dreadful things some were calling Boris in their daily bashing. And even worse the insults hurled at Forum members for having the nerve to vote for Brexit. But in general I agree with you. Time for New Year's Resolutions all round. We need to save Keefie from the brig!Bensham33 wrote: 28 Dec 2022, 17:36For what it's worth I agree with Ray and Carole. Keep Keefie in the Brig for a spell, I’ll even act as jailer, cos I like him.
He’s not allowed to walk the plank though.

Because you have bothered to write what I consider to be a fair and thought-provoking post I would like to respond in a manor that may or may not give you an insight as to how this topic has ended up where it is. I will be the first to admit that I have played my part in bringing it to this point, I also admit that my use of gutter language shouldn’t be used on an open forum or indeed in any other sphere of conversation regarding others, so at this point please let me reassure you that onelife isn’t the person that my expressive language would have you think of me…I [back seat moderation removed]
What you and others have witnessed, is I believe, as Sir Merv has said…which is the virile language that can easily get out of hand, especially when one’s particular views are challenged. The difference is however how some respond to these views…some have the intellectual use of language to avoid using such gutter references but they themselves are as guilty as those who don’t have those skills, in so much as they can make cutting remarks by intellectual stealth…. you will have noticed I haven’t as yet required these skills.
With regard to the Monarchy, there has been provocation from both sides of the argument and while I can’t see a compromise happening any time soon I will in future use less flowery language when referring to ‘your’ King and Queen Consort…. even though I will be doing so through gritted teeth….[back seat moderation removed]

Re: Current Affairs
Hi Sir Merv, I thank you for your sincere endorsement of my value to the forum…as to whether I sink or swim will depend on what David decides for his New Years Resolutions. I know this will come as a surprise, but for some unknown reason I’m now sitting on my third warning and unless David is prepared to show clemency, in wiping my slate clean, I can’t see how I can last more than a few weeks without one of you provoking me into a heated debate….so if you truly think me worthy of an extended stay of execution perhaps you could put a good word in for me….Oh’ and best not listen to what screwy and Stephen would have you do… they are trained to see the worst in everyone.

Keefie baby, I see your predicament and maybe a sentence hanging over you, but cheer up all is not lost, reach out to David and charm him to show compassion by sending a box of Keefie chocolates.

Re: Current Affairs
Betcha all of the anti monarchists will tune in to the Coronation for the magnificent historical spectacle that it is, just as they tuned in to Her Majesty’s funeral.
Most our age are likely only to witness one in our lifetime.
We are seriously blessed in this great nation by continuing with our traditions.
No one and no where does it better.
And people want to chuck this away ????
Unbelievable !

My second too, though I have absolutely no recollection of my first, perhaps because we had no TV.

Re: Current Affairs
I watched it on a neighbours TV, there were dozens of us there.
It was a 9 inch radio active screen in a four foot square wooden cabinet
I also recall that it was a rubbish picture

Hi Ray, I’ve only met David and his Gorgeous wife once before but it was plain to see that he was a man of considerable stature, sophistication and dashing good looks….him and me have more in common than he thinks.Ray B wrote: 28 Dec 2022, 21:55Keefie baby, I see your predicament and maybe a sentence hanging over you, but cheer up all is not lost, reach out to David and charm him to show compassion by sending a box of Keefie chocolates.

My second coronation too - watched it on a neighbour's tv - we didn't have one. I remember being given sugar sandwiches - no idea why I remember that - having lived through sweet rationing I guess it was a treat

Didn't have a TV, honestly can not remember if we listened to it on the wireless, but I can remember the party tables full of us kids stretching away for a good quarter of a mile.

Re: Current Affairs
I would like to think you are right about Her Majesty’s funeral because she cannot be faulted for her dedication to her hereditary role as Queen. However, I betcha I won’t purposely be tuning in to watch this forthcoming spectacle, other than what I see on news coverage…each to their own and all that.barney wrote: 29 Dec 2022, 08:44Betcha all of the anti monarchists will tune in to the Coronation for the magnificent historical spectacle that it is, just as they tuned in to Her Majesty’s funeral.

In thirty years or so time most of us will be pushing up daisies and it will be then that this generation of Royalists will have faded into the past, it will be then that the new generation of thinkers start questioning the value of The Monarchy and how it has influenced the bad governance of our country.
Just my opinion of course.
