Did anyone else think how disingenuous Sir Kier sounded this morning when he was crowing about how he would reduce our taxes by freezing the council tax, if he was in power.
No mention of where he would find the money to enable councils to offer this largesse however.

We've had frozen council tax in our Tory controlled area for the last few years, and it's only going up by 3% this year.

What they don't mention, and neither did Sir K, is that either you fund the difference from central government taxes, or you get poorer services. There's no such thing as a free lunch, though sadly many voters think you do.

Of course many of the voters Sir K appeals do don't pay tax so are very happy for the rest of us to foot their bill.

All well and good but how are we going to keep them from all going AWOL….if they are illegal asylum seekers the kindest thing we can do for them is send them back on planes and be done with it….all this farting about trying to dissuade them will accomplish nothing when you have the French telling them that the UK is still the land of milk and honey.

Give it five months and we’ll have the human rights brigade up in arms telling us how cruel we are leaving these ILEGAL asylum seekers in squalid living conditions.

Freezing the council tax should be limited to rural areas as we get a very raw deal when it comes to services here in the lovely Shropshire countryside.

Our tax in Broadland up 4.62% (Con) Norwich 2.99% (Lab) Norfolk 4.99% (Con) Precept for The Office of Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) 5.2%. The Police has the biggest but you never really notice any more police on the beat.

'Towny’s... is a colloquial way us rural folk refer to people who live in towns…the mere fact that it was ‘towny’s’ post that I attached my post to shouldn’t be taken that I was taking the p*ss or that he should contribute to Shropshire Council's services…give me a break Ray, I've already had one threat of a good slapping from Towny

When the consequences of such promises have no delivery date, other than when/if they get into power then they have no more meaning than the unfulfilled promises made by those who are in power.

Dear Asylum Seeker Supporters

I am sure you are full of best intentions, but before you complain about the facilities in which those who are seeking asylum are housed please look around you.

The facilities may not be luxurious but if those occupying them are genuine refugees they are fleeing far worse and are now being safely housed and fed at the expense of the UK taxpayer.

Many of those paying those taxes are living in poor accommodation, far worse than a hotel room, and many are cold and hungry.

So when you campaign for better facilities for refugees spare a thought for those footing the bill.

It would have been much better if the Home Office had been more efficient and not allowed the backlogs to build up, so all this accomodation was not required. Much better to have got people processed, so that they were able to either work, pay taxes and live in the community, or if their asylum claim was not granted, to be removed from the UK. The Home Office now needs to extract it's digit, and get the backlogs cleared to ensure that the facilities you describe are only required for the short term.

Hi Gill,

I don’t have any inside knowledge as to how efficient or not the home office has been dealing with asylum claims. What I do know, if reports are correct?.... a large proportion of asylum seekers arrived here without papers which I believe will have made processing their claims (in a timely manner) almost impossible Imo, add to this the language barriers then I think its fair to say the task of trying to ascertain which of the many thousands of asylum seekers have legitimate claims must, and continues be a logistical nightmare.

If you know where the Home Office can conjure up a few hundred interpreters, legal advisers, medical staff but to name a few of the many services required to speed things up then I’m sure they would love to hear from you.

The forecast for this summer’s intake of illegal immigrants coming over in small boats is around 100 thousand.
Nobody, and I mean nobody has a solution or answer.

One solution could be for the government to nationalise all the Airbnb houses and flats.
We have literally thousands down our way but nothing available for long term rentals for local working people.

My take is that most claim to be refugees, then there can be no complaints to them being housed in large refugee camps, away from urbanisations.
There are acres of flatlands in the east of the country which would be perfect for refugee camps.
We could even ask the UN to help pay for it.
There would be no need for security because anyone who absconded would immediately be classified as an illegal immigrant as opposed to an asylum seeker.

Plenty of Airbnbs and second homes up here. You'll not find many locals objecting, they were priced out of the market long ago.
