I think this should be taken seriously – the whole world has become a computer; our lives are controlled by them and we are becoming subservient to them. Computers have become so advanced that they now think for themselves without any human input, capable of finding new solutions which may in time allow them to take decisions without our knowledge…as an example, if AI became so advanced that it advances its self beyond human comprehension who is to say that AI couldn’t make decisions about mankind’s future…AI could come to the conclusion that we are destroying them by destroying our planet and as a consequence produces programs that close down permanently anything that it thinks is contributing to the worlds downfall?

That's a great script outline for a new sci fi TV series, you just need to add a mad Russian demagogue and a Chinese emperor conspiring to infiltrate warped AI malware into the Pentagon and GCHQ computer systems, and it's a sure fire hit.

If it only has to be cleverer than mankind to rule the world I have a tin of soup that can do that in many cases!

Only yesterday I saw a social media post from a loony leftie still claiming Covid was a Tory scam!

That part is not true. All computers need some human input.

Nothing is true until it happens David.

The late theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking famously postulated that if AI itself begins designing better AI than human programmers, the result could be “machines whose intelligence exceeds ours by more than ours exceeds that of snails.”

Just pull the plug out. Or send Trish into the room. She can stop my PC by just looking at it.

I doubt it Mob, it’s more likely that you have forgotten to do the washing up after dinner. ;) :)

The point that you are missing is that somebody has to tell (program) the computer what to do in the first place therefore there can be no such thing as totally AI

Yes, they can be annoying when they do that sort of thing.

I’m still considering whether to renew Mrs S contract.

With respect David what the article refers to ‘if my understanding is correct’ is that there could come a point where man’s input (programming) is superseded by a computer that not only thinks for itself but also makes decisions/judgments beyond that of what it is programmed to do.

Science fiction maybe but theoretically possible given an open mind.

Your photo has really changed what I think when the image comes up with one of your posts. The previous one made me think, now there's a man enjoying himself. Now when I see the new photo it looks so stern that I think, Oh dear, what's happened, he looks so severe. Are the underlings misbehaving?

Which is the real Stephen?

I couldn’t agree with you more Carole, although it has to be said that when I looked at his other self- portrait image it did make me feel so handsome. :D

So today with your permission I’m starting the “Bring back the old Stephen Campaign”

Back to A1, it use to be the frightening thing in early si-fi films on the pictures, but back in those days it wasn't a reality. Now with computer advances leaping forward at a pace, while not in our life time, maybe, but in the future, OLs fear may be a possibility.
Don't worry, be happy
