Maybe, just maybe, the difference is 70 years and HD colour TV. In 1953 the only way to see it in colour on bigger than a very tiny screen was to turn up. I suspect in 2023 the majority, like us, will watch at home. Or are you going to use your own logic and assume the only fans of the Grand National are those standing 20 deep round the course?

The name Operation “Golden Orb” would appear to be very appropriate considering how much this Coronation bash is costings the tax payer.

Compared to his mother’s coronation it is extortionately expensive with the late Queen’s Coronation costing £I.57 million, the equivalent of £46 million today, whereas this scaled down bash is coming with a fluid estimate of £100 million…instead of installing central heating and air conditioning units in his horse drawn carriages perhaps the money could have been more appropriately spent on a rugs and slippers for journeys of just over a mile.

His state coach was first used for one of the Queens jubilee celebrations, and contained all the current features, so no extra expense involved.

Hi Foxy, it won’t come as any surprise to you when I say that I don’t believe the tourism revenue figures such as that which the likes of Forbes and Bloomberg conjure up.

I was at school in 1953 and I have vague memories of going to a neighbour who had a tv, a tiny screen, and sitting on the carpet to watch with lots of people in the room. My brother and I were both given mugs at school but that's obviously not happening today - if it did there would be an outcry from some people as to how much it would cost. My grandaughter has seen my Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Mug and I promised her that if she wasn't given one at school, which she won't be, that I would buy her one. There are so many to choose from but I think I'll go for a traditional one, actually that's three as I said I would buy one for each of my grandchildren. I would like to enjoy watching the Coronation without caustic comments from people who are anti monarchy but I don't think that'll happen. I will enjoy the whole day whether other people do or not. I agree that if the route copied the original one then some people would moan about the extra cost.

Alvaston Hall. It's only 25 miles from us (about 45 mins) so we thought we'd give it a try as it's very convenient for a quick weekend break.

Of course a major part of the increased cost is security, to guard against the anti-monarchist hooligans. So they cause the cost then complain about it.

A friend of mine is in a care home and we have been invited to join them to watch the Coronation. It will be a wonderful day, full of pomp and ceremony, we do that so well don't we.

I got my information from a news article which put out the same figures OL was quoting. However what he didn't quote was the other side of the story which I was happy to correct.
Apparently much of the cost is taken up by security to ensure the day isn't spoilt by nutters. I'm afraid I wouldn't be as gentle with protesters as we are for whatever cause. Why deliberately set out to disturb and disrupt just because you don't agree? I loved the rough justice from the crowd in dealing with the loony tune heckling Andrew at the Queen's passing through Edinburgh. I might agree with him but wrong time, wrong place.

Indeed we do do pomp, pageantry and ceremony so well. It's one of those occasions we feel proud to be British and can show the rest of the world how to put on a show.

It’s a shame they couldn’t extend the same security to the other Royal, Harry and his family, especially when you consider all the caustic comments that have been made against this lovely couple.
