Royal Ascot: Ladies' Day or Not?

The Thursday of Royal Ascot has been called Ladies' Day since 1823, the day when there are amazing outfits and hats to be seen. I usually watch Ascot each year and have gradually gained an interest in the actual racing as well as enjoying the fashions. For many years it was presented by the BBC but ITV have now taken it over. Usually a certain amount of time has been devoted to the fashions and always a description of what the late Queen Elizabeth was wearing and who the designer was. This
year there was hardly any time devoted to the fashions. I know many enthusiastic horse racing fans aren't interested in what everyone is wearing. Anyway I tuned in on Thursday to watch Ladies' Day. The commentator said, 'The Thursday of Royal Ascot week has always been referred to as.....Gold Cup Day!' Yes the Gold Cup is ran on the Thursday but I've never heard it referred to in that way. It seemed to me that great care was taken not to mention 'Ladies' Day.' Now it may be that I'm just being suspicious but could it be that it's now considered non pc to use the phrase 'Ladies', or am I just being over sensitive? Incidentally that day was a wonderful day's racing. Frankie Dettori won the Gold Cup for the 9th time. The crowd loved it, and loved it even more when he was presented with the Cup by the King and Queen and he gave Camilla a resounding kiss on the cheek. One of the King's horses previously owned by his mother also won a race which seemed to make him very emotional. So I wonder has Ladies' Day been banished and we only refer to Gold Cup Day in future? I suppose it's progress!

You're right Carole. My wife tune in to see what everybody was wearing and there was hardly a mention. She was very disappointed. Usually a great deal of time was given over to the fashions (and some rather irritating and nauseous experts commenting) but that was all sidelined.

However I must say didn't Catherine, Princess of Wales look absolutely stunning? She looked tremendously striking and literally stole the show on Friday.
Not interested in the donkey walloping but Kate, your Highness....stunning..........phwoar!!!

The Princess of Wales certainly looked stunning Foxy. I agree with your wife, there used to be a section, small but interesting, about the fashions. BBC used to present Royal Ascot and I remember it started with a very smart car drawing up at a lovely country house with a very smart man stepping out to greet a lady who was pictured in a very elegant outfit coming down a lovely flight of stairs and him escorting her into the car and setting off for the racecourse. What did we get this year on ITV - two male presenters sky diving onto the racecourse. As far as the dress code it's different for each enclosure and certainly the cheapest enclosure where the dress code is the most relaxed could be compared to those who prefer to eat in the buffet on a formal, sorry Celebration evening rather than go to the Select Dining Dining Room. Today there were rumours of someone interesting in the fourth and last carriage of the Royal Procession. It turned out to be Frankie Dettori who is retiring this year and whose final Royal Ascot this is. Apparently it is not the done thing for any guest in the carriages who isn't a member of the Royal Family to wave and the commentator said that Frankie must be sitting on his hands as he managed not to wave during the procession. Needless to say the cheering was incredibly noisy as the racegoers realised who he was. What a way to end a career. He then had to leave the Enclosure as he was racing in one of the early races.

It is PC nonsense. Can't call it Ladies Days or you'll upset the ones identifying as women with dangly bits down their pants! For goodness sake give the real ladies a chance to show off their finery on their traditional day while OL donates his pension to the grateful bookies.

Must say she is fitting in very well to her role in the Royal Family and will clearly appeal to the younger generation.
