Re: Carnival Shares
That's the gamble Meg.
Hopefully they will now recover enough to eventually get some sort of profit from them, depending what you paid for them.

Re: Carnival Shares
Didn't many people do what we did, purchase them in order to gain extra OBC on every cruise? There were some years when we took 3 cruises, that was a lot of OBC. I'm sure we had much more back than they originally cost - I can't remember how much they were when John purchased them, which reminds me I still have to contact Hargreaves Landsdown to get them put into my name.

Now then, were you a Prince Charles or a Princess Anne when you were at school? (Hope you remember them or this post will seem very rude!)Mervyn and Trish wrote: 13 Jun 2023, 09:11You capitalists! Never mind shares, how are my Post Office Savings Stamps doing?
I will add that I was a Princess Anne!
If my memory serves me well, Charles was blue & Anne green.

I seem to recall Prince Charles stamps were 2/6d and Princess Anne 6d.
I could never aspire to the heady capital heights of 2/6d

Re: Carnival Shares
That’s right. In our school there was a strict order in which the stamps were distributed- blues before green (that didn't particularly bother me. What did annoy me was the dinner ticket colours - white for paid and pink for free. Even as a six year old, I realised that wasn’t on.) I can’t remember how we got the savings stamps home or whether the stamps were stuck in your book at school. I would be quite worried in case I lost an almost full book of blue stamps on the way home.

Re: Carnival Shares
My old dad used to bring the savings stamps home with him, mine was a 6d of course. It seemed to take for ever to fill the book but joy oh joy when it was full. What would I buy ... no matter my Mum bought me a pair of shoes with the proceeds

My Mum used to go house to house in our village selling them so we were practically Royalty ourselves!Ranchi wrote: 30 Jun 2023, 15:13Now then, were you a Prince Charles or a Princess Anne when you were at school? Ah, that’s interesting. I’d only ever come across them in schools.

Re: Carnival Shares
Never came across them while I was at school, or possibly my family was too poor to be able to afford savings.

Re: Carnival Shares
Probably not, although I did learn to duck when our English teacher threw the blackboard duster, and I seem to remember getting free school milk, but sadly only 4 O levels.

A mate of mine failed to get the A levels he needed to go to University. Instead he got a job on the bottom rung at the local Westminster Bank.
He ended his career as Technical Director of the Co-op Bank and Chairman of the Link organisation that connects the various ATM machines.
So there's more to life than academic qualifications.
