Re: Current Affairs 2023
Maybe there’s a reason why the Tories win more GE than Labour.?

Is there a better way? Surely that's local democracy. The local party will have a better idea than anyone whether a potential candidate has credibility in the constituency. Unless of course you want Nadine Dorries and Jeremy Corbyn as the next candidates in your patch?towny44 wrote: 04 Jul 2023, 09:23I wonder if the archaic system of candidates being chosen by the local party committee could be to blame

Re: Current Affairs 2023
I know that the Labour front bench keep using that phrase, however if our banking system is so frail that a premiership lasting only 49 days could " trash " our economy then it needs a major overhaul, especially as Jeremy Hunt had already had 11 days to remedy some of the problems that Kwasi created.paultheagle wrote: 03 Jul 2023, 12:08I don't know. Bad management maybe, The Tories nearly trashed the economy less than 12 months ago, so like I say none of them can be trusted.towny44 wrote: 03 Jul 2023, 11:39So what do you call it when, as in 2010 the Labour govt borrowed more money than we could afford to pay back?

From my experiences of local party activists I doubt that many have the ability to judge the suitability of any prospective candidate, and certainly not their ability to handle high office.Mervyn and Trish wrote: 04 Jul 2023, 11:46Is there a better way? Just when you think we can move forward the Met are reopening party gate. Looking at the party advertised as 'cringle jingle get together' or something like that.
Pity they can not spend their time and money on something more useful like protecting the puplic against violence and criminals.

It's a pity they weren't more pro active when civil servants were going out and carrying in booze for their parties in suitcases.
Security wise did they inspect them and if they did did it not flag up that restrictions may be broken? Surely that was the time to react.
I'm not fully convinced about the difference between a group of people clear of Covid working in close proximity of each other and the same people in close proximity with a glass in their hands. It's hardly a hanging offence and I would have thought the Met had more pressing priorities to deal with.

I wonder if with the latest partygate episode the police will issue a summons for the person who took the video and then leaked, sold, gave it to the press. Surely if they took the video then they must have been at the party thus breaking the rules.

Good point David! What about the other gatherings where someone was fined, did that include the photogapher. Honestly haven't we had enough of Partygate? I know I have.

It's a lot easiest and safer to nick party gate participants than going out to solve crime and dangerous criminals

You can bet the news hounds are sniffing around for anything they can use to surgest that so and so may be involved. The nearest they can get to without actually bringing a case for defamation.

Re: Current Affairs 2023
There are a number of serious issues here. First off if the accusations are true the star should be fired and possibly prosecuted.
However at the moment they are allegations, just that. And while they are investigated the star, like the victim, should have anonymity. Mud sticks and lives and reputations have been destroyed in the past for innocent people by false allegations.
But now so many idiots wrong people are being names in the great court of social media there is pressure for the actual accused to be named to protect others. It's a cyber lynch mob. What happens in the 21st century to innocent until proved guilt?

Stephen? Work? Wash your mouth out!
BTW, for clarity, I used to work for the BBC. And I haven't been on my Saturday radio show for 4 weeks. But it ain't me. I've been in Cornwall. That's not illegal.
