Okay. You know my views on football. So sit down for this one.
Tomorrow, for possibly the first time in decades, I will be voluntarily sitting in front of my TV at 11am watching a game, the Women's World Cup Final.
You may need a drink now. I know I do.

Sweet Caroline will never have sounded So Good, So Good, So Good if they can pull it off.

Re: Football 23/24
Throughout this tournament and the Euros they have been a joy to watch.
Meanwhile the men's team has invariably disappointed when it mattered most.
Great to see a match being played without all the histrionics and play acting on the pitch.
Win or lose tomorrow they have been a credit to the game and an example the men would do well to emulate.
Nice also to see families of spectators enjoying the match without the mindless numbskulls tanked up on alcohol who have no respect for anyone else.
There's plenty to be proud of. Lionesses we applaud you.

I still think offside is when the left winger runs up the right hand side of the pitch.

That's when he is tracking back to help his fullback defend against the opposition's right winger!!!!Mervyn and Trish wrote: 19 Aug 2023, 22:45I still think offside is when the left winger runs up the right hand side of the pitch.

I agree 100% with what you say about the Lionesses. As for the other bit about families and ' brainless numbskulls tanked up on alcohol' That ain't true, not now. I reckon you haven't actually attended a game of football since the 1980's. If that is a what you think about those of us that have.oldbluefox wrote: 19 Aug 2023, 20:45Throughout this tournament and the Euros they have been a joy to watch.

And all clubs have their idiots. Anyone thinking there are no issues with English men's support is living in cloud cuckoo land. Even this season we have had problems with foreign objects thrown on the pitch. It's a shame we all share.

Re: Football 23/24
Yes you are right but it's a very small minority that do those sorts of things. Not every football fan is a brainless numbskull tanked up on alcohol and there are loads of families that go to football. Misbehave at football and get caught then it's a life time ban in most cases so most fans behave and if you arrive at the turnstiles and stewards believe that you have had to much to drink you don't even get in and if, once your inside the ground you drink to much then you are likely to be arrested. So there are very few mindless numbskulls tanked up with alcohol inside a ground these days.oldbluefox wrote: 20 Aug 2023, 11:21I take it you didn't watch what happened at the England Italy Euro Final at Wembley then.....paultheagle wrote: 20 Aug 2023, 10:54I agree 100% with what you say about the Lionesses. Not pedant at all. Call the laws of the game rules and any referee will tell you they are laws not rules.oldbluefox wrote: 20 Aug 2023, 11:37Pedant...just sayingpaultheagle wrote: 20 Aug 2023, 10:55Football doesn't have rules, they have laws........just saying.

Re: Football 23/24
I see the "experts" are already criticising the team and their coach.
Please remind me, as a non-football-expert myself, which of these critics have ever won, or even played in, a World Cup Final!
This is why I don't like football. It's not the game itself, it's the endless meaningless punditry afterwards!

Meanwhile ........
Played 4
Won 4
Lost 0
Goals for 4
Goals against 0
Top of the league !!!!
4 x clean sheets !!!
Reminiscent of the Tony Pulis team of '94/95 when we kept 20 clean sheets - still an EFL record

I don't think Merv is a referee or will give a monkey's. I know I don't but if that sort of thing pleases you, be my guest.paultheagle wrote: 20 Aug 2023, 13:50Not pedant at all. Re: Football 23/24
It is a small minrity but it's a significant one and it's this loutish behaviour which spoils it for many. I didn't say every football fan is a brainless numbskull (not sure where you got that idea) but I have yet to hear any reports of bad behaviour from the ladies matches either inside or outside the stadium. I wish the same could be said about the men's game.paultheagle wrote: 20 Aug 2023, 13:49Yes you are right but it's a very small minority that do those sorts of things. Correct me if I am wrong but it looked like there was no segregation between opposing supporters and alcohol was allowed onto the seating areas. Is this common in the men's game? Rugby can do it so why not soccer?
